Back tire drives in neutral

Hey gang! Just came over from BDOwners.com. I hadn't been on there in a while and was surprised to find it gone!

Anyways, I got my 05' Chop up on the stand and had to adjust the pushrods for some other work I did and while I had it up on the lift I started the bike. I noticed the rear tire turns while the bike is in neutral about maybe 20 rpm. It does it even with the clutch in. It isn't enought to notice anything while I am riding. Only when the bike is in the air. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Marc

clutch may need to be adjusted or it could be that you have the old clutch basket and it has cracked making the clutch lever not work properly. just some thoughts or it could just be normal clutch drag.

The dealer mentioned the basket my be cracked too. I take what they say with a grain of salt. I may have to pull the outer primary cover to see, unless there is a better way to confirm this?

Hesitate to say this with authority....just my logic and thinking....if you hold on to the wheel and it stops without too much force – I would consider that acceptable and normal. A result of the engine RPM's and a floating wheel. I have seen this happen on many dirt bikes (ones for kids with no gears on the stand with the engine on there is tire rotation)
I'm sure others will chime in but sure feel it’s OK in my opinion.

I could stop the wheel easily. I have only about 5100 miles on the bike and don't hammer it very often. I was surprised when I saw that thing turning, especially it being in neutral.

Like narow said try adjusting the clutch may be a little drag worth a shot with it stopping when you grab the wheel.

i've seen cars that will do the same thing. neutral and the wheels still spin.

I don’t see how adjusting the clutch will help….when engaged the clutch FREES the engine from the tranny….from what I understand the bike is in “neutral”…typically one would adjust the clutch if…..when engaged the motor/engine continues to “pull” and NOT rotate freely….

Yes the bike is in neutral and when I stop the tire and release, it begins to spin again. Not fast, just about 20 rpm. It doesnt ride bad. It isn't noticeable when I am on it... only on the stand.

If you had a cracked clutch basket, your bike will want to walk when the bike is in gear and the clutch pulled in. It is very common on 05 bikes that were made at the beginning of the production year.

Welcome to BDB! My '04 Chopper does the same thing, since it was new. Never really gave it a second thought.

It's not the clutch, the basket, and adjusting it would do anything. ITS IN NEUTRAL guys. The thick trans lube is causing a parasitic transmission of power.

Nothing is wrong.

Everyone that says this is Normal (especially when you can stop it with your hand) are RIGHT ON! If you mess with it, you won't fix anything and you will just F--k something up.
