Avon Cobra Warning

Energy One
That is definitly a manufacture defect. Looks like the sidewall compound did not cure correctly in the mold. Your very lucky it did not blow out. Sidewall failures are the worse, be it a car, truck, or especially a motorcyle. You need to contact Avon and let them know about it. Make them pay for the install also. Let us know what happens. I also have the Cobra's on the front and back with no problems so far (2500 miles)

Please keep us in the loop on Avon's response to this. Getting close to a new set of rubber for my bike and was leaning towards these tires. Their response will determine whether or not I go with them...

Thanks and I'm glad you made it haome ok and this didn't turn out bad!!!

Wow , glad you didn't wreck or even worse because of those splits. I replaced my front tire "Avon Cobra" at the last part of last year, and it seems to be doing great. Seeing those splits in your back tire make me second guess Avon's for the back for sure.

Again glad you caught it as quick as you did !

I think we all better check our tire manufacture dates. They must have had a bad batch. I'm heading out to the garage to check mine.

It seems like all the problems lie with the Cobra. Is it possible to buy a rear tire that is a regular Venom and not a Cobra?

In answer to Fibersnakes questions: The tires were ordered from a mail-order company talked about on this forum by several members. The tires manufacture date is 30th week of '09, tire pressure was as specified in the owners manual at 40psi, the tires were mounted in September of '10 and they had almost 800 miles.
Let me preface by saying I know nothing about tires and glad no accident occured due to the tire.

Does how the tire is stored impact the tire integrity? The tire was stored for over a year before mounting.

Mine did the same thing last year just before I left for Sturgis. Didn't have time to get the proper replacement so put a Harley tire on and wouldn't ya know..... it made the EHC go out!!!!!:loony::loony: Just as Postmans the cracks appeared in one day on mine!!!!!

that isn't bad

I have only put 7k on mine in a year and a half and Im almost to the wear indicator.....
I can't get past about 8500 miles for a rear tire on the bike... and I don't do burnouts. These are just 8000 mile tires. And if you ride as much as me, it gets expensive!! About 2.5 to 3 tires a year!! (plus 1 to 1.5 fronts per year)

Just got off the phone with Jermany and i'm not a happy camper. He told me to take it to my nearest dealer and ship it back to the factory. I ask about the cost of the of the removeable and install he said that was between the shop and me. I ask how the cost of the new tire would be handled he told me that was between the dealer and me. Either the dealer or I wiil have to wait up to 30 days on the money or approval for replacement on teh new tire. This sucks for customer service I am done with Avon tires.

postman, that really sucks!!! I wish I had known this last year before I bought my avon cobra, I would have chosen another brand for sure!!:bang:
It's really bad when they won't even stand behind there product.

I like the avon but if they cant stand by there tire than i will switch to metzler. I talked to a guy from bdm in atlanta n he said go with the 280 metzler that should elminate the rubbing problem that the 300 has. Has anybody done this if so what kind of results.

They should certainly stand behind their product. What did the online retailer say about the tire(s)? The retailer should be your voice to AVON I would think. Wonder what liability the retailer would have if the bad tire would have caused serious injury/damage??? I don't even think my BDM service center I use will install tires not ordered thru them for liability reasons.

Does not sound like it but I sure hope you get a resolution to your satisfaction.

I've got 2 of the Cobra fronts with the same manufacture date (3009). I got them from DK just a few months ago.

I will be contacting Avon also. Please keep us posted as to their responce when they are returned.

I just got the answer from Avon how they are doing customer service on defective tires. I'm responsible for the cost of shipping of the tire back as well as the cost of the take off and install of new tire. The money for replacement I would have to wait 30 days. The cost for my new tire[Metzler] is 105, I fill that showing this tire to other riders is worth more than the 60 dollars differance. So if any of you guys see a K-9 rolling down the road with a tire on the rack it;s me. Also , heaven forbid any one gets hurt from this tire I will keep tire for future referance.
