I just got my bike out of the shop and my speedo is still not working. When I put it in the speedo was jumping around everywhere. They told me at the shop that it need a Trans. speed sencor so they put one in it.On the way home I tried to reclabrate it and it still did not work I called my macanic and he said that it was probably the speedo then. After I just spent $100. on the sencor.I got on the phone and called Auto Meter the ones that make the speedo and they told me that if the speedo is jumping around that it is getting pulses and that it has probably lost groung to the speed sencor or to the speedo or that the bike is not putting out 12 volts.Any out puts on this.

Would check over the wiring and make sure that you have good connections. Might want to also pull out the sensor and make sure it clean, even though it is new.

After that I would start questioning the dealer how they can charge you to fix something by changing parts and then not get it fixed and say it must be something else. WTF is up with that, do they not check the shit after working on it.

Sounds like part changers and not even good ones at that if they charge you for a new sensor and then say it must be the speedometer.

If I read the original post right, it is BS and shit like that is what really pisses me off. Had an incident like that once with a Durango, ended up telling them to put the original part back on and to take off the price for labor on the orignal since they did not fix it and just assumed it was something else.

They ended up leaving the new part on but taking off the original labor and follow up and basically endd up paying the part that was bad to begin with.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

The place I took it to was not a dealer its a custom cycle shop my bike is not under warranty any more and the dealer that we had 60 miles away lost his dealer ship now the closest dealer is about 200 miles away. But back to my macanic. I thought the same thing about putting the sencor on and it not working he should have took it back off at no charge and found the problem. Now I still have the same problem just a $100 poorer.Trying to run it down myself. You know I dont know how much Big Dog wants for their speedos but the have them in J&P Cycles just like them for $200. with a year warranty by AutoMeter.

The J&P as pointed out here before will not fit unless you want to re-wire it to BDM connection.
Couple questions for you:
Do you have the serial port EHC or the USB port?
If the USB port then it needs to be flashed by a BDM tech. This causes the speedo to cycle twice.
Have you pulled the speedo bucket and checked the connections and filled them with die-electric grease?
Have you pulled the tank and traced the wires to see if you have a ground?

I would bet you have a ground based on the age of the bike and it's most likely under the tank. Good time to fill the connectors and shrink wrap the wires and re-arrange them to prevent wear.

The Chopper tank comes off easily and it's a great idea to do the wires for future "peace of mind"!

Good luck,
Ray

If you pull your seat off you will see the EHC plug. On older bikes it's a serial plug but if you've had your EHC replaced recently you may have the USB plug.
There is an update that flashes the EHC that corrects some issues with the speedo.

Serial plug - round
USB plug - rectangular

Would still guess you have grounds under the tank. I've had quite a few and even have some now after my trip to Sturgis. Headlight going to highbeam, turn signals lights on and such. Pulling my tank again this week.
