I have a 2003 chopper 107"
Xxx carb
Dua runner intake
V & h big radius
When I am going down the road it acts like its running out of gas then backfires like hell then starts and runs fine for about ten or twenty miles and starts doing it again for the last couple monthsit has been running great and then I was out yesterday and it did this and wouldn't start back up
Any suggestions would be great
Thanks Mike

Sorry I forgot to mention I Had it dyno tuned a couple months ago and they serviced it put new plugs, wires, and coil on it also I pulled the petcock valve yesterday and drained the tank incase of bad gas had good flow from tank to carb and screen in tank looked good like new..
I filled it with fresh gas and still doing it
Thanks Mike

Possible fuel delivery issue. Does the gas cap on that year have a vent gizmo that may be plugged? Did you test fuel flow with the cap on tight? If not, give that a go. Let it run a half gallon or so to make sure your tank isn't building up a vacuum.

What thor said, make sure the gas cap is venting properly

When I drained the tank yesterday the cap was on tight and it drained a full tank pretty quick I pulled the hose off at the carb and drained it into a gas can the tank only had 17 miles so it was pretty much full and I watched it till empty and looked to be flowing good till it went empty.... Then filled it up with good gas and went for a ride ran great took it out a couple hours later and it did it again only this time I got to push it home about a mile...
I was thinking maybe my float was sticking or something but I don't know after pushing it home I didn't even look at it again lol
Thanks again

Looking forward to retirement
I had that problem with my 03 chopper but #1 it was August, It cranked back up and I hauled ass to the house. 2nd, I started running AV gas or Super unleaded 93% non ethanol fuel with Rocket fuel additive in it to boost octaine level to 96-97%. I also added a BDM oil cooler with a stash tube. Knock on wood, it has not done it again!

I would do all those things but in my little town I am not sure I can get AV gas and all the gas stations carry is 91 octane I usually add some octane booster with ethanol free gas when I can ..
The other stuff I hate to do because I want to get it running good and trade it off as this will be the fourth summer I have had it and have had to put it in the shop at least 1 to 2 times every year breaking the bank on all occasions..
I had to buy a trailer to ease my concern of breaking down anytime I left town and finally just broke down and bought another motorcycle.
Not what I wanted to do after paying for this one not that I am against having two rides but I don't wanna be forced into it because of reliability issues with one of them...
I hope to get it running good again and trade it for a nice bikes can just ride and not wonder if I will make it home whether it's across town or across state...
And parts availability and services for this bike is getting more difficult to find..
Sorry for the story just want to get it going cheap as possible
Thanks
Mike

Hey Mike, your just down the road from me. IF the weather holds I can make a run down there this weekend and see if we can't get your issue figured out. Lemme know....

Hman I definately appreciate that I work from 5am to 5pm fri. Sat. & sun. And am off the following weekend I get home around 5:30 if you wanna come by or wait till its good for both of us I was thinking about dropping the carb bowl off this evening and checking float or plugged jet as I have seen on other threads. The main thing is I don't wanna put any $$ into it if possible if it'll run good for a test ride I will let it be a dealer problem..
I just don't understand this I just took it on a 400 mile trip and it ran perfect and then this starts but even now it runs great for awhile then starts backfiring like hell and dies when I try to start it turns over then backfires some more but won't start or if it does start dies within seconds.... Frustrating lol
Thanks Mike

You've got dirt in your jets. Drop your fuel bowl, look for dirt, then remove your main jet and clean. Same thing happened to my dads bike, same carb as ours.

Ok I'll do that on the jets
I just went out and started it revved it up and sounded great once warm sprayed WD40 around intake gaskets no change in idle ran for awhile then died wouldn't start up immediately so I pulled the plugs they looked good cinnamon color turned off fuel to carb pulled plug on bottom of bowl got a little glasnost sure if bowl was full or just draining hose to carb

As far as cleaning jets do I just drop bowl and they are there so I unscrew them and clean or is there more to it it was just rejetted a couple months ago but I didn't do it
Thanks for the help

Dropped the bowl pulled the jets didn't see anything blew them out with air and put them back and took it for a spin it didn't die this time ran good it hiccuped one time on hard acceleration then didn't again the next time so maybe was the problem will take it out for longer ride tomorrow if I can and see if it's good if so hope it will stay good for trade in...
Thanks for all the replies

knucklehead you were right on the jets it's running perfectly now took it for a long cruise with my boy as kind of a last ride and decided I enjoy riding it to much and can't let it go so I'll be keeping it lol
I just wish it wasnt such a PIA but I'll keep at it and hope eventually it'll make me a good ride
thanks for the help
