While in Daytona I talked to a dealer that suggested that the TP rocker boxes maybe the cause of most of my top end noise.Has anyone had theres changed out and did it reduce the rattle?

Still have the TP Rocker boxes, though everything else from valves to rockers were changed. Not sure how much difference in noise just switching out the boxes will make, but I have been happy with my TP Boxes and had no issues.

Had mine changed also at my 5K service, it made a small difference in rocker noise which was starting to really bother me.

Doing it right now - The main reason for change is the TP boxes are similar, but not identical, to S&S. Can lead to premature valve guide wear. Only way to know if you have a problem is with a leak down test. I've been told the TP boxes had some chrome issues - my were fine.

Have not rode the bike yet, so can't comment on noise level.

I;m a believer that if there is nothing wrong with it dont f--- with it.
I have a 05 chopper and it has T.P. boxes on it also with the rattle
in them but it does not affect anything else yet and it is not near as
mush noise as im used to on my old shovelhead. If it f--- up I'll fix it
then.Get louder pipes.

Pardon my ignorance but has BDM gone to strickly S&S rockers or still using TP rockers. How do you tell the difference? What's TP stand for?

does anybody know the reason they use TP boxes instead of S&S? I also read on another thread last night there is a rumour the heads are not S&S either - anyone else heard that or know anything about it?

Lee,
I had posted on the other thread "will Big Dog step up" that I thought the heads were not S&S...seems like I read that quite awhile ago. Sul corrected me (and he is VERY in the know about these things) that the heads on these bikes are in fact S&S, and that they say so right on the castings. That was my misinformation, sorry about the confusion...and thanks to Sul for clearing that up.

What would be the symptom of a premature valve guide wear?

I am having a compression test and leak down test this Thursday on my 2002 Pitbull. I have been chasing a very smalll main (62) and a loss of 30 HP on a DYNO, and have come to the conclusion that it must be the valves. Bob at xXx did my carb last week (beautiful job by the way, well worth the money) said the carb was in good shape except for what looked like valve blow by back into the intake manifold and the carb. I can only think this is from a valve problem. Carb OK, Exhaust OK, Timinng OK, What left. Intake VALVE letting some of the air fuel mixture excape resulting in a small bang (less HP) and I guess a small carb main jet to deliver less fuel due to air leaking out! I think I expect a not so stellar compression check and a leak test with some leakage into the carb. I guess we will see in a couple of day. If it is a valve/valve guide problem is the answer just a valve job (port/polish while we have em out??)? Thanks for any advise.

Also was going to pull the heads myself. Any ball park figure on what a shop would charge to just pull the heads (labor). The guys at BIGBOYZ Big Boyz Head Porting - Powered by vBulletin do a port/polish/perofrmance valve job staring at $299. Sounds reasonable to me.
