What is with these bikes?????? I have an 06 HD Fatboy and have never had any problems. Now I hear stories of gas caps not being able to be opened, wheel bearing problems, paint problems, tank liners separating, numerous electrical problems, wheels breaking etc. Did BD not employ any engineers? No wonder they folded!!!!!

In defense of Big Dog are you saying Harley davidson throughout its company history has had a quality product and had 0 engineering issues ?

My wife's 06 brand new sportster would kill batteries because of the electronic alarm system. Technician new right away so that means so did the company.

While I'm not saying Harley Davidson bikes of today are not quality I think they are but they certainly have had there fair share of engineering issues over the companies lifetime.

Big Dog motorcycles are not a Harley Davidson knockoff and the company was working through its issues by the end of its lifespan.

Big Dog motorcycles had the hottest bikes on the market there last few years of business and were really coming on strong. BDM a disposable income product just couldn't endure the crash of 2008 jmo

I think I hit a nerve, didn't mean to, just giving my impression based upon all of the complaints about them. I own one now myself and love the bike. I have read on the forum how many folks are fed up and afraid to ride their bikes any distance. I have owned three harleys over the years and have experienced no major issues with any of them.

Basically, what we have is a custom bike with a large bore engine that puts a lot more strain and vibration on the bike than the Harley's do. I know I've had my share of stuff to fix, but I can see that most of it was self inflicted because I ride so hard. I wouldn't trade mine for the........ well I might if the price is right

Don't overlook the numerous posts about the thousands of miles clocked by happy bd owners with few to no issues. Usually including lots of good pics and sometimes a video or two. From all over the world.

That's true. It's just when someone has a problem, this is the place to come, so of course it looks like everyone has a problem. It's like watching the news.

I for one am one of thousands of happy customers.

Here in Australia, well where i am anyway we ride big miles and not many towns in between, certainly no HD workshops or other bike shops at all. You're lucky if you can get Premimum Gas every 100miles.
Treat your Dog with love and attention, put it up on a stand after riding, get changed, grab a beer sit and admire a very nice piece of engineering, taking special note of any loose nuts, bolts, covers, oil leaks, rattles.
Do this and change your oils earlier than recomemded and you should enjoy many miles without worring about breaking down.
Just remember Shit does happen, not just to BDM's.

Bummer!
...and I don''t know why yours broke... I have the same design (Mad Clown)

but I try to avoid:
- belt too tight, or misaligned
- rear pulley bolts loose
- excessive burnouts
- excessive heavy passenger (at all costs!)
- hitting a bump or pot hole hard and bottoming out

Cannot help "metal" fatigue or flaw in aluminum...
or if someone or thing banged it from the side and warped/bent it; or someone tried to bend it back straight...

Okay, Okay, Okay, uncle, I retract my earlier comments!!!! Can we still be friends? :2thumbs:

John
hey John,
I was not trying to send any negativity your way or diss you...
Sorry if it came off that way... :(

Just trying to be helpful like others on here,
It would take alot to "not be friends"; you are a "friend" by just being here and participating in my opinion.

Not saying anyone made any mistakes here; but I learn many things from people on here everyday both technical and personable...

I think we kool -- right?

8 years no issues with my hound, 2 years into the harley and top end let go. Harley has only 500 miles on it since buying the BD.

When ppl have an issue with their big dog, they toss up a new thread, when riders have no issues they are riding and not posting.

Read the answers to some of these issues and you will see some were not issues.

BD sold over 28,000 awesome motorcycles, and if everyone had even one complaint, it stands to reason there would be over 28,000 complaint threads, which there are not. Every motorized (fill in the blank) has issues, it stands to reason we would also. My buell is acting up, so I pulled the mastiff out and rode that instead. :D

The reason BD folded is not what you are thinking, do a SEARCH, the answers are in several threads.

Now, lets ride...:choppersmiley::choppersmiley:
