When I was taking my jackscrew off to get the starter off I pulled out the pinion gear to far and it came all the way off.Any body know how to get this back on?
Post a pic. The jackshaft is a few pieces, the gear on the end, a spring, and the splined shaft. Once you pull the screw holding it together, they all just slide out/in. Why won't it just go back on? I'm assuming you're posting about a 2002 Pitbull. If it's a RSD bike then it's all different.
Ok now I think I see your problem first the internal shaft that holds the bolt and the bushing your refering to have nothing to do with each other,if you take the jackshaft out and look at the sleave the part that connects the two (starter and jackshaft) you will notice a snap ring about 2/3rds of the way you may have that backwards which causes your distance issue in the primary on Ultima starters I have always replaced the bolt with all thread to adjust the amount of contact between the jackshaft and the ring gear (you may not need to) as thats all the bolt does is holds the assembly together the bushing is in the outer primary but to answer your question putting the bolt in is what holds things in place and determines the amount of contact with the ring gear and all Ultima starters are setup for either the small or large bolts if you lay your old starter next to your new one I`ll bet they are the same.Make sure you leave the primary a bit loose crank it over with the spark plugs out to line everything up then tighten primary and go with oil and ride it
I did not take out the snap ring so it be can't be backwards.I am now thinking the jackshaft is sitting out to far because now when I tighen the jackshaft screw there is to much play between the gear and the shaft.
By the way I am returning the ultima starter and getting my old one rebuilt.
I know this is an old post, but,I'm still trying to figure out what's going on with my starter on my 02,I posted a picture under my "Bendix" thread,at the time I did not know what it was called,In my pic,the pinion gear has like 45deg.wear on each tooth. While searching I found this thread which pumpdog shows his 02's pinion gear with no 45's on it.My question is,does anyone know if the pinion gear teeth are supposed to have 45's on them or no.My local starter guy says it's made like that, but he seemed like he never saw one before. Here is mine
