ANY IDEAS??

Energy One
Need some help guys. I just get my 05 chopper out of the shop after almost 2 1/2 months for the top end noise issue. Dealer replaced heads, rocker boxes, cylinders, pistons. While they had everything torn down I decided to go with the 600 cam package. Finally pick up the bike yesterday and ride home (20 miles), seems ok except needing a little carb adjustment. Decide to put a few miles on it while keeping below 3000 rpm and just cruising around town in an area without a bunch of stop lights to keep air moving across cylinders. I start to notice a little rough acceleration after making right turns from a stop. Doesn't do it making left turns or straight riding. Happen to glance behind after taking a right turn and I'm leaving a trail of blue smike like a fighter jet at an airshow. Smoke clears up after a short distance, but keeps doing it every hard right turn. Head back to the house and am thinking dealer overfilled oil tank, so I pull seat and check oil. oil level not even close to bottom of dipstick. Decide not to add any, so dealer can evaluate how much consumed in the 50 miles I put on the bike after picking it up. I call the dealer and they send a trailer to pick it up.

So I figure I have a few options;

1. Never make right turns
2. Modify a camel-pak to hold oil instead of water
3. wash bike, never ride it and just look at it a lot and ride the harley.

What do you guys think for possible reasons for the smoke. I thought might be too much ring gap, except only notice smoke after right turn. What about the breather gear? I'm at a loss except for the fact the chopper will be sitting at the dealer for God knows how long this time...

SIICK!!!
you did the right thing by having the dealer take it back....sucks about the down time....but it shouldn't be smoking like that.....I had the same stuff done to my scoot this past spring....except they didn't change the pistons...just rocker boxes ...heads....valve train to S&S and I already had the .640 springs in the bike.....also had them put the .600 S&S cam in mine also! fucker runs great!!
sucks about the downtime again....but thats what I would have done....let us know what your dealer finds out...

I beleive you have excessive valve guide wear. If you'll call S&S tech support they will tell you exactly why it smokes in a right hand turn and not a left hand turn.

My thought as well, during the right hand turn oil builds up on the right side and flows down the valve guide where it dumps into the cylinder and burned creating the blue smoke your seeing. As the oil heats up and thins out more will run down the guide or guides. If the problem started after you got it back then there is a good chance they forgot a seal.

Sounds right considering they swapped springs on the new heads. I will share what I find out later this week. Thanks for the help...

That is exactly what mine was doing when the valve guides went to hell. Smoked (big white cloud) after a right hand turn only, not left, and then would clear up in about a hundred feet and be fine.

Well, dealer called today and told me they pinched a valve stem seal when installing the new springs (640) on the new heads to handle the 600 cam. Everything is back to normal according to them and I pick it up Friday. Will let you guys know if problem solved, thanks for the help guys...

Sounds like they got things worked out.

Glad to see they got it back in so quick after you told them there was a problem with the work they had just done.

Anyone dealer can sell you a bike, it is the service that will keep them in business during tough economical times.

Can't complain about the dealer they have been good to me, cut me an excellent deal on the cam, associated parts and labor. They initially thought the stock springs would suffice and decided they should be changed to the 640 springs. Never charged me for the replacement springs. The delays were on the BDM side waiting for parts, returning the wrong ones and again waiting for correct parts. Looking forward to getting my hands on the bike tomorrow morning.

Picked up the bike a little earlier today and everything feels good. Need to tweak the carb a little, but no more blue smoke trails. The new 600 cam gives a nice little loap at idle, have to see how much the mileage drops after I get the engine broke-in again.
