Any bugs/known issues? 2006 K-9

I'm seriously considering a 2006 K-9. In fact, as soon as I get a call back from the owner, I'll probably be calling my bank.

Is there anything I should know about the 06 K-9s? Like any bugs or anything of that nature? Any known issues?

This bike is sweet, and only has about 1500 miles on it. This is going to be my primary bike and I want it to be rock solid. I plan on making a few road trips this summer and need it to be able to be reliable.

check for TP rocker boxes.... do a search some or the 06 models came with them,, if its got em plan on changing to S&S rocker boxes... misalignment issues...

Ask the owner when was the last time the bike had been to the BDM Dealer for service?

Also, ask if all of the service recalls and service bulletins have been performed and are presently up to date?

Also ask if he has "all" of the service records on the bike and do they come with the bike?

That should be good enough if the answers are good for you.

These bikes are hot rods, not generic Harleys. If you hate working on bikes from time to time, can't turn a wrench, stay away. If you like cool bikes, being stared at riding down the road, chicks offering BJ's cause your so cool to be riding a bike like that, buy it.

Thanks for the info. I just looked up the info. It seems a lot of folks have upwards of 30-40k miles with the TP boxes. This bike does have the TP rocker boxes. I can tell from the pics it only has 4 bolt holes and not the 6.

The bike is at a dealership and not being sold my an individual. I think I may have stated my opening wrong. However, it's not a BD dealer. It's more of a all around power sports dealer. The bike has 1,500 miles on it. I'm sure the service bulletins have not been addressed and their knowledge of this bike, or Big Dog's in general isn't much at all. All they can really tell me is the bike is spotless, has never been down, and it's a 1 owner bike where the owner traded it in a pair of 4 wheelers.

I think you took me wrong. I'm not trying to start a slam fest with my question...I'm just trying to find out what I'm about to get into. I've read every post in the "Positive Reliability" thread and am happy to see owners with no problems. I'm not asking for negative comments, at all. Please don't think I am. I'm just trying to see 100% what I'm getting into with no surprises. This bike is going to be at the top of my affordability list, so I'm not going to have 5k+ to spend on a new motor. I'm a gearhead and don't mind doing work myself. I'm no motorcycle mechanic, or mechanic at all but I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and have a full set of tools. The thing is, I'm going to be doing some 500 mile round trips on this thing with a group of friends and I just want to make sure it's up for the course.


When I buy the bike, it's going to max me out of what I can spend. I'm going to put about 4k down and finance around 11k. I know the economy sucks, and I work in construction. However, if I only owe 11k on this bike, I don't see a problem getting rid of it if I had to at the drop of a hat. So for the time being I'm not even going to be able to pay TN sales tax. That will have to wait till spring but the good thing is I can just transfer my tags off my existing bike onto this one. Renewal in TN is under $20, but sales tax is going to be 6% of KBB value. The first thing I'll probably do even before buying tags is send it to R&B cycles for the service bulletin updates and maybe even a normal service.

It seems like with the TP Rocker Boxes that it doesn't happen until higher in mileage. I wonder if it's safe to say the bike will be good to go without doing the mod this riding season and do it over next winter.

Thanks for the input guys. Like I said, not trying to bring up a negative thread or anything, but wanting to join the BD family and I like the reassurance!

Yep, Most likely, especially if it's a major issue! .:2thumbs:

Just remember, it's recall and service bulletin repairs, "NOT" warranty repairs!

That's not the answer. If your valve guides are getting worn you could drop a valve as we've seen here from time to time. It's cheaper to pull it apart and fix it with some S&S rocker boxes and new guides. IMO

Now I won't kid anyone here about the use of TP rockers and boxes.
Some of them "may" be just fine. And others "may" really be way out of alignment, causing a lot of premature wear on the guides.
But it's not easy to check for the proper alignment geometry and it also takes some special tools and the knowledge of how they should be set up, "correctly".
So I wouldn't take any risk with your investment or baby, which ever you prefer to call your bikes.
Have it checked by someone "that knows" how to check the alignment, and if it's off, replace with the S&S rockers and boxes!
That's a lot cheaper than possibly ending up with a badly damaged motor! :2thumbs:

Yea my dealer pulled them apart and said the alignment was good. the loud pipe thing was kinda a joke.you know how it is they may say anything to keep me happy.i did see them apart and mine makes less noise than many i have heard.i keep it serviced and ride the shit out of it maybe it will hold up

As stated already,these Bikes are like Hot Rods,they do require TLC and $$$$$$$$$$$$$.
There will be some issues along the way,what they will be?you will have to take that road to find out.you may enjoy many trouble free miles with out problems,take the road its worth the challenge. I own 2 k-9's and have spent $$$$$$$$$$$,not too much on problems but add ons and high performance work. The experience you will get out of a custom motorcycle words can not describe,and it has no price... Take the road,you wont regret it.

With the milage on the bike I wouldnt freak out about the TP boxes. Some owners put big miles on the TP's without issue. Others have had problems early on. Get to know your bike, oil blowbuy to the box, top end noise etc. Kinda hit and miss but not a required upgrade unless you suspect problems.

On a side note I'm a big fan of TP's products. The issue is mating to an S&S lower. Not sure why Sheldon thought that was the way to go but TP stuff is generally more expensive so have to guess it was done as an attempt to make an improvement :loony:
