Once again, trying to figure out this noise.....I know its so hard to listen on video, but thanks to all that give it a shot!

Again, bike was fine, changed oil, filter. Went out for ride, started to hear noise, like bearings, rubbing. I had like a retard put tappet screen back in upside down, and it got smushed a bit. replaced with new one, put in right way, still have noise.

Hmmm....well, maybe that is a good thing. Maybe if the engine was really F'up, it would be sounding a lot worse...I'm taking it in on Monday.

I just need to have it fixed before the charity motorcycle ride I put on for my wife in October who passed away.

Kelli's Ride

Thank you guys so much for all the help.

Listening to that video doesn't strike me as anything odd. Just the same noisy S&S that
I have and I am sure everyone else here does also. Either way when you bring it in I hope it's nothing. Good luck with the ride, I went on the website and my heart goes out to you for your loss. Very beautiful girl. It seems thought that you were both surrounded by alot of good people that care about you. There should be some comfort in that. Be safe.

Trying to visualize the tappet screen being inserted upside down – i.e. the flat lip on the top and the conical point at the bottom. To me that would not necessarily block the flow of oil, at best restrict it just a bit. I would not overthink this one – to me the engine sounds normal, if in fact there is some noise it could be a coincidence but should have nothing to do with the tappet screen being upside down.
Good luck – Have a safe ride and god bless.

Was the tappet screen dirty when you cleaned it?

Could junk below the screen have been allowed to get in the tappets with it basically removed?

I doubt this is the issue, but just thinking out loud.

I did hear 3 chirps. Otherwise, it sounds good to me. Send this video to S&S and maybe someone there can tell you what it is.

X's 3 So sorry for your loss.

I listened to it a couple times and it sounds about like mine. One thing I would ask though, Do you hear any weird noises when you are running 60 or 70miles an hour? Just listening to it there it sounds about as normal as an S&S.

PM me an address and I buy a ticket to Kelli's Ride even though I can't be there, it is a little more than a day ride from Tennessee, I would be glad to get a ticket, buy a T-shirt for the cause.

I did have a front lifter get clogged up with crap and it would knock for about 30 seconds before it pumped up. Replaced both of the front lifters and no problem. Blew the old one out with compressed air and it looked almost like grease coming out of it. Tappet screen was always clean.

Hard to pickup anything from the vid. Also very sorry for your loss. V

Thank you everyone for the kind words about my wife, she was beautiful both inside and out...I miss her so much everyday.

As far as the tappet, yeah, it was upside down and a little crushed, so I think I messed up the lifters, but I don't know. But, the fact it was a little crushed concerns me. Here is what it looked like when I took it out.

Let me know what you think, also have another thread going with similar questions.
