Another clutch story

I am pretty positive my clutch basket went tits up. My primary fluid looks greyish, like lots of metal and I put it in fresh yesterday.
I took my my bike for a test spin after some extensive maintance, It made a loud squeeling, didn't squeel anymore after that.

I adjusted the clutch yesterday. It was perfect in the begining, then it seemed to fall out of adjustment in a few miles. To wear the clutch was dragging and had to limp it home trying not to stall.

So from all the info i can gather It must be the clutch basket or locking nut?
or both?

What i need to know is replacing the clutch basket a easy job without specialized tools? can I buy one drop in assembled ready to go??
Curious about this.
I am pretty decient Mechanically but I want to make sure its something I can handle.
From the posts I have been reading it seems so, just would like a little clarifacation so I can have everything ready at once.

Merry Xmas

a little more than "drop in" but i'm sure it would be do-able for you. you need to remove the clutch hub nut and the clutch pack anyway to clean the threads so you can re-torque the nut and at that time you can see if the basket is the old or new design and if it is broken you can make the determination to replace the clutch at that time. i believe the only real specialized tool you will need would be a 1 5/16 socket and a torque wrench for the clutch hub nut and remember the nut is reverse thread. you will need to remove the motor nut also so you can remove the drive chain (not enough length to flex it out of the way without it).

I just got finished pulling it apart now.....I didn't see a break in the clutch basket the clutch bolt I can't turn with my fingers...I'm off to the store to buy a socket, red and blue locktight and some more gasket maker.

If you find nothing wrong with your clutch basket, I would suspect that the back side bolts may have been scraping your inner primary? Beginning in '06 they started adding a shim that goes on the tranny shaft. there is a thread on the how too about installing the shim.

It was 1 3/16" and it was loose!! no locktight or anything!! Now I have a nice craftsmen 3/4" breaker bar and some big ol sockets. going to locktight and try again

Clean the threads on the nut and the shaft good! Apply Red loc tite and let it sit and set up before adding primary oil in the primary and starting it up. It'll help keep the nut from loosing up again...

Confucius say "remain silent and be thought a fool, open mouth and remove all doubt" .

my sincere apology, SB, i could have sworn it was 1 5/16. sorry if this has caused you a problem. i will try to re-program this old brain of mine and not do it again. i know socket sets ain't cheap, especially if money is tight.

I wish I had more money.
Good for you bud! If nothing else I'm an advocate of trying yourself. If you can't get it squared away get help. But when you nail it, that's my pleasure!

The bigger one will fit the front sprocket bolt if you ever need to remove it so hold on to it. If you would have read the many "How To" clutch threads here you would have known it was a 1 3/8" or 35mm :)

Be sure and get a torque wrench on that thing, I do 100 lbs. You will be surprised at how hard you gotta crank on it, because of all the "give" through the whole drive train. Just doing it by feel is usually not enough. This is a common and persistent problem.
