Well where do I start? I was riding around last week when I noticed my clutch had increasing slack in the handle during my fifty miles. I go home and adjust the slack through the clutch cable adjuster. I then decided to check the clutch pushrod and realized that it was very loose and had to tighten two full turns before I could back off the 1/4 turn and secure it. Readjusted the clutch cable adjuster and was on my way. Just prior to this I would get occasional clutch slipping at higher rpms in 3rd and 4th gear (but not all the time). After reading all these threads I didn't want to believe that it was the clutch hub nut. My scoot has almost 5k miles. Then I red a post where the one member said that he would hear a rattle at higher rpms as if it was coming through his valve covers. I had the same noise develop this past month. He went on to say how the noise was carrying through the primary and to the engine and ultimately was the result of a loose clutch hub nut. Once I read that I knew primary cover was coming off.
Yesterday morning I drained the fluid and took the outer primary off. After screwing with that retaining ring for the throw out bearing assembly I finally made it to the clutch hub nut. Go figure, I was unscrewing it with my fingers. Needless to say I took all the advice from all the threads on this matter and seated it by torquing the nut. I then took it off, cleaned threads and nut real good, loaded up the red loctite and torqued the shit out of it. I know there are different torque ratings between the service manual and these threads so I split the difference and torqued it at 135 ft lbs. (Don't ask why) I put everything back together and readjusted the clutch pushrod. The clutch push rod was not seated as far in now. Lubed the clutch cable with bike aid at the grip and clutch cable adjuster. Put it all back together, then using the tightening sequence from the manual I installed the primary cover. The primary gasket looked fine so I reused it. Let it sit for about six hours and put 32oz of ATF type F in the primary. Throttle had play in it also, so lubed and adjusted those cables as well. I waited until this morning to ride it so the loctite would harden.
Let me tell you all, I could not believe how great it rode and shifted. Didn't get on it too hard but no clutch slipping at 3000-4000 rpm in 3rd and 4th like before. That dreaded rattle sound was also gone and no leaks anywhere. Sweet! The service manual was very good but all the feedback on this website is what allowed me to tackle this job, and saved me a ton of money by keeping it out of the steelers hands. The whole job cost me $5 and that was just for the fluid. Big thanks to bigdogbiker.com and it's members. By the way I put spectro 75w140 in the trans last week and waiting for my K&P in the mail any day now. I recommend for everyone to have this clutch hub nut checked with every primary oil change.
