ANOTHER CAM BELT SHREDS on the 2009 Wolf

Well.... I joined the crowd at 3100 miles.....just inspected belt at 2500 mile service. Also just had rear cylinder rocker cover gasket leak and replaced along with the Baker transmission gasket and seals leaking so had those replaced. All of this in the 2300-3100 mile range.....this is getting expensive!!! Belt shredded but hasn't broken but timing has jumped....knocking sound and engine shut down....I pulled in clutch as soon as I heard the first knocking sound and engine died.....one mile from home so lucky I sent a friend to get my trailer. Got to call S&S and see if they will help me out.:(:(:( Anyone have an X-Wedge Cam Belt Tensioner Socket for sale??? S&S website says they are out of stock....

Thanks Brew....this is my second X-Wedge Wolf....first one had no problem except the exact same Baker transmission gasket and seal leaks. Funny thing is I believe the teeth on the belt broke off or wore down and it basically slipped..... lots of fibers inside cam cover but belt is still intact....always on a Saturday Sunday or holiday....lol....and it was such a beautiful day! So this is a minor glitch and I still love the X-Wedge ....it runs it's ass of is is very powerful and quiet when all is working correctly. Should have already had a spare belt on hand....I HAVE LEARNED!!

I believe S&S came up with a correction for this problem and it's mentioned in one of the threads on here somewhere...

Ok...thanks....I have read most of the previous posts from current members. The fact that only 149 2009-2011 Wolfs were made makes for a small pool of info but this belt issue has been well documented. I am calling S&S in the morning and see if they will offer me any parts help. I hope so because I also had a rocker cover gasket go bad at around 2500 miles and now this belt failure at 3100 miles so stuff happening way to early for this engine and not to mention the previous owner had already sent the engine back to S&S earlier on to fix a crankcase leak which has also been another problem on the X-Wedge. They took 6 months to fix that... I also had that crankcase oil seepage problem on my first 2009 Wolf but it wasn't that bad an I took it to Kendall Johnson in North Carolina and Kendall said just to wait it out to see if it got worse which it did not. Just very dissappointing to break down in riding season. The cam belt lists for $110 on S&S website but you have to buy from a dealer.

Sorry to hear that, I got around 8K miles on mine and still have my original cam belt on it, I think Chacha said that they came out with a new stronger belt.
When I upgraded my cams I put the easy start ones and now the bike turn over with very very little offer and I was told that would help to prevent the cam belt from shredding. I think I'm going to change my cams belt very soon though.
My wolf doesn't leave any oil leak on the ground but it get oily all over underneath the engine and on the bottom of the frame, and every a few hundred miles my back wheel get dirty with oil too. I been dealing with that since day one but I have not idea where the oil come from. I wonder if it is the Baker transmission gasket or the crankcase.
09 wolf what do you think my oil leak problem come from?

I would definitely look at the gasket and seals on the transmission..... that is where the oil on my back rim was coming from and yes it gets under frame also.... check it on the right side of your bike. Also the crankcase leaks I have experienced were only in the front of the engine where the two halves met.

you'll want to talk to Brent at S&S -- he's "Mr. X-Wedge." They do have a new cam plate and tensioner,but only send it for problem cases as the bulk of the motors are not having problems. The Tensioner socket you can make from an 11/16" socket and just cut 2 of the six sides out -- that's all S%S does for the part.

If you don't have an X-Wedges Service manual, I recommend getting one as it's worth the 30 bucks.

If you don't have the easy start cams, it's a worthwhile investment while you're in there -- it's simple to do if you have the service manual.

I agree it's a good motor with tones of power, but it does have some headaches. I've got a leak at the pinion seal now-- S&S is sending the replacement parts to a shop I use. They won't send anywhere but to an established shop.

I have to say that S&S is standing behind their warranty on the motor :cheers:

Thanks Donna for the heads up on the belts! I will be calling . Also to update everyone, I just spoke with Brent at S&S this morning and reported my troubles and he is sending me a new cam belt, a cam cover gasket, one rocker cover gasket and a X-Wedge repair manual all at no charge. That was fantastic news for me and he told me that since I was the second owner that his hands were tied as far as providing me with the 569 easy start cams. He explained that Big Dog initially declined those cams being installed in their first engines which would have only cost them around $50 more per engine at production time. So I will have to pay for that upgrade myself. All in all I think I was treated very fairly and I can say that Brent is the man! By the way his extension at S&S is 1242 in case any other Wolf owners need that. Hats off to Chacha for that info.

Thanks to S&S and Brent also thanks to Donna and "Bigdogpartsking" for the rapid shipping of my cam belts both of which arrived last Friday. I have already changed out the belt which is a simple job and rode trouble free all weekend even placing third at the annual bike show at Thunderroad Harley Davidson of Danville,VA this weekend....a fellow Big Dog biker won best in show to destroy all Harleys on his K-9.....Big Dog bikes are still rocking even over 2013 model HDs!!!

Glad to hear and congrats on the Bike Show. Recommend adding a cam belt inspection every 1000 miles to your maintenance list -- I have :)
