AMSOIL QUESTION

OK. For those of you who use Amsoil here is a question for you. I am told that this oil doesn't need to be changed till 25,000 miles. I was told this by a Amsoil booth at a local motorcycle show. He said if you used Amsoil in your car you could go 25,000 miles before the next oil change. Because of the way the oil is made. So is that true for motorcycles? I change mine at the beginning of each riding season. He says its a waste of money. What do you all think? If you use Amsoil how often do you change it?

I am a dealer and do not agree with 25K in a motorcycle. I do that in my car but not in my cycle.
It is said that you can double your change miles if you use Amsoil synth. In my case my 5k change would now be 10k.
Personally I still change every 5k. Overkill Yes but gives me peace of mind.

Now in my car(2003 Chevy Impala 4.3 V-6)I have changed 1X per year since it was new with the Amsoil 25K oil. I now have 149K on it and can still go a full year(about 18K)and add less than a qt.:2thumbs:

I sell and use Amsoil in all my vehicles. There is extended oil for cars but I would not go that long with an air cooled v-twin. I change my oil in the dog @ around 3-5 thousand miles depending on the time of year and oil condition. I do a visual and a smell test for condition. I can tell you that I have found Amsoil to stay cleaner longer and not get that burnt smell as quick as other oils that I have used.

I change mine twice a year, at least, really do not care about mile's i maybe only run two to four K miles per year...

He may just be someone they hired for the day to cover the booth.
May have some basic knowledge of oil but lacks the understanding.

I do 3K in the bike and 5K in the truck. In the bike I pull the K&P filter and it looks like it just came out of the box. Drain it and put it back on. The lifter screen looks the same. The truck new filter at every change. In the bike we are talking about pennies for oil vs. 30K bikes. New plugs at $1.99 each and new oil every 3K in the bike.

I use Amsoil and usually change it a couple times a year.

Amsoil 20w50 motorcycle oil can be run up to 6000 miles. I am also a dealer.

I will change mine around every 5,000 miles, Amsoil synthetic oil after 5K miles will be in better condition than a regular v-twin oil after 2,500 miles.

:2thumbs: X2 - In my mind, the quality of the oil may allow more mileage between changes but the oil contamination needs to be removed more often.

Funny the seller would tell you that since Amsoil on their recommendation charts recommends for Normal and Severe Up to 2 X OEM recommendation for conventional petroleum oil, not to exceed 15,000 or 1 year.

Also per Amsoil, extended oil drain recommendation are excluded for modification and alteration. Examples include the use of performance computer chips, non-OEM approved exhaust, fuel or air induction systems, etc.

As per my O& Manual for a 2005 Mastiff, the recommended change interval is change engine oil and filter every 2500 miles, if one is to use Amsoil extended drain recommendation, that would be every 5000 miles, assuming no modification.

All said from my experience, oil is cheap and is the life blood of the engine. Spending $30-40 buck every 2500 miles is cheap and good insurance compared to trying to save a few dollars and increasing the chances of major engine damage due to such.

Also oil itself basically does not fail, but the additives, contaminations and abuse play major part into how good it is. Though Amsoil provide better start-up protection as well as high heater resistance to failure, like many other good synthetics do, there is still some contamination occuring from wear as well as inflitration from outside element being it mositure drawn in and of micron sized dirt.

Changing such at regular intervals will help remove such and is just a small price to increase the chance for many many happy miles and a more full wallet!

Your bike, your call. For me I use Mobil 1 and change at 2500 range, oil and filter and the primary and tranny on average ever other oil change.

The gentleman behind the Amsoil booth was basically explaining how using Amsoil can help the enviorment by not changing the oil so often and having all this old oil dumped somewhere. Assuming someone would pour it into the ground or a drain. And if we can push out oil changes to 5 thousand miles on our Dogs then I guess that does help the world and our pocket book.
I to change twice a year. And filter gets changed every oil change (which he didn't mention about) After talking to the Amsoil guy it just got me wondering how often we change our oil on the Dogs. And with that its warming up here and its time for the oil change!

If you want to see if you can extend your oil change interval have an oil analysis done. Blackstone Labs will do an analysis to tell you about wear metal, fuel dilution, and TBN (oil additive packages).

The test costs $35 and is worth it if you use it to extend oil change intervals. Personally I use Mobil V Twin and change it at 3000 mi. Helps me sleep better at night.

I use Amsoil and change every 2500-3000. I change the oil and filter. Compared to the other money spent on this dog the $50 to change the oil is chump change. To each there own on this one.

my father-in-law has been a gear head for 50+ years, been around and has seen all types of engine oils............can rebuild an engine in his sleep.
He once told me to gauge when your oil is shot by carefully noting the change in color and that it will dictate when it needs to be changed. The oil will break down over time due to thermal conditions. It used to be standard practice to replace every 3000 miles or so. It really depends on the abuse the oil takes with the ups and downs of operating temperature. I've gone 10K on engine oil in my truck with no issues (125k on it now). The dog tends to run a little hot and the oil takes more abuse. i would change that out more frequently. If changing every season gets you to monkey around with the bike....you might just spot some things that often go overlooked. Not a bad thing either. that said...............amsoil appears to be the "big-dog" when it comes to engine oils.

My Dog runs around 200 degrees Fahrenheit on a hot day in Louisiana (I don't have oil coolers either). S&S recommends the oil temperature run between 180 and 250. Why would your oil run hot in NJ?

I like the Amsoil also, but I do switch back and forth with Mobil One, all my bikes get oil changes every 1,000 miles ~ To me, it is just cheap insurance & piece of mind for the 50 bucks spent. When I visit my Grand Children 550 miles one way, I even dump the oil at my Son's house, I just dump out the oil filter and re-use it. At steady 80 mph on the interstate, the price of 3~4 quarts of oil is cheap.
