Alright, I'm putting 1500 dollars into my bike for whatever you recommend...

Energy One
suspected need for wires plus kit because the bike kills all the time...need a new speedo, bike starts hard and doesnt hold a charge, after the bike idles and "warms up for a bit" I click it into first and it dies...I want to take it to somebody with a dyno within maybe a 5 hour drive of des moines, Iowa...What do I tell the mechanic other than "you have a budget of 1500 bucks, make this thing hum like new again"

please please and thank you!

Sounds like you have several issues at the same time. The engine dying when you drop it into gear is most likely due to a need for clutch adjustment. You need to pull your battery and have it load tested to make sure you are dealing with a good battery. Then a very detailed check of you wiring for shorts, bad ground, and poor connections is next. Be sure to pull the gas tank and check all wiring under the tank, fill all connections with dielectric grease while you are there to prevent corrosion problems in the future.
A dyno is used by tuners to get maximum performance out of timing and jetting of the carb and is really useless in diagnosing electrical problems. Do a "Search" on here for mechanics and hopefully you can find one close or someone will chime in with a recommendation. Good luck.

X2.

Follow his advice and you have a good chance of fixing all your problems for $0. Then you can buy a round for all of us and pay for the strippers!:D

Yeah Tyler unless that mechanic is a personal friend I would not open my wallet and say take what you need, I gaurantee it will cost right at $1500. As Steve mentioned above sounds like a few little issues all at once. Battery or charging system, your speedo issues may be related to voltage probs and the die when clicked on gear definitely sounds like a clutch adjustment, easy adjustment that even my dumb ass can perform. I'm willing to bet you it won't cost you too much to have a reputable mechanic hook you up, challenge is finding one you can trust.

thanks guys i'm glad i listened to you before doing anything...I think i'll have a buddy do all this since I'm in no way mechanical whatsoever. Thank you very much for the advice though. Still should probably have it on the dyno though correct?

Again Tyler, a dyno is only needed for fine tuning for maximum horsepower, at this point in taking care of your problems, that is the last thing in the world you need to do!

I got the new Falcon drive belt and it will soon be featured in the posts to follow as I button up this project. Also got the new "Slam button" installed along with boot and grommet on my starter. Just waiting for the transmission to hopefully arrive tomorrow. As always, very fast service on your part. Thanks Curtis!

Edit: Panther Drive Belt, Transmission has arrived and I am going to get on it tomorrow(Friday)
