Air Intake Screen - Change Performance?

Hey all -

I'm thinking about putting in the air intake screen (stainless mesh) from the LowDownChopShop!!! I love the look.

Says "no rejetting", but wondering what you all think? More air will make it run lean won't it?

Thanks again. rich

That's what I'm looking for, thanks.

I'll change out the intake eventually, but have to save my pennies. Thought this would be a simple (cheap) way to improve the look, but didn't want to affect performance or may it run like crap!

Thanks. rich

After installing the mesh screen on my Mastiff, I got a lot of exhaust popping when letting off the throttle, especially when drifting down long grades with no added throttle. I had to do some minor carb adjusting, but all is OK now. I carried a long, thin blade screwdriver for the first couple trips after the popping began and tweaked the carb during stops. All is fine now.

Thanks, Hippy!

I hate to sound stupid, but don't know where to start in adjusting the carb. Can you give me the short version? Appreciate it.

I drilled 3/8" holes in my stock plate, 1 inch apart in a pattern and it really dressed it up from the slick chrome stock plate, as well as letting it breathe a little easier.

When I installed the mesh intake screen from LowDownChopShop, the bike would hesitate and sputter a bit whenever I went over about 70 MPH. My dealer told me that too much air gets rammed into the carb with that setup and that speed. Sure enough, putting the stock plate back on fixed it.

Then I got the bike dyno'd, and the guy told me that I'd get better performance with a more open intake. He ended up removing the plate, and sure enough, in riding home, I had very little, if any, times of it hesitating and stuttering at high speeds.

It also turns out though that my bike was running a blit lean before the dynoing, so this probably accounted for the problems I had before.

I think now I'm going to play it safe and go with the louvered plate from Big Dog. However, I'm thinking that with bike properly jetted and adjusted, the mesh may be fine.

The only time it will get a bit too much air is with a K&N installed. The stock air filter restricts what can be forced in. The stock air cleaner is so open on the back side it doesn't really change things unless you installed a K&N earlier without rejetting at that time.

So, In a nutshell, If you rejetted with a K&N, my screen will not need any other changes. If you did the filter and the screen, you will need to rejet. Stock paper filter and screen, no rejetting needed.

That makes sense bdmridgeback!

Turns out I do have the K&N air filter, and with the bike already running too lean prior to the dyno, it's no wonder I had issues. I believe you when you say that properly jetted, it will not have an issue even with the K8N filter.
