Aftermarket Ignition Recommendations

I have the Dyna Y2K. Works just fine. I had mine installed while the motorwork was being done.

On the Harley I run the Dyna-S (single fire), dual coils, dual plugs, manual advance, and a rev limiter set at 6K.

Since installation the bike starts easier, runs smoother and cooler. I know this will sound odd but the bike almost has a sweet smell when you ride behind it, there's no gas smell whatsoever it burns so clean!

Installation is a piece of cake and once adjusted I haven't had to change the timing since install. For prices you'll have to check out their website or another dealer...

My FatBoy hasn't let me down in 14 years with this system! :2thumbs:

I don't think anyone can claim horsepower increase, however a properly tuned engine will have more horsepower. That being said an aftermarket ignition will give you that adjustability. Even though I run a Crane HI-4 I would agree with the others as far as the Dyna ignition being the best all around ignition that will fit directly as your stock unit does. Like Raywood said if your going to change the ignition then go with single fire. Bike will start, run much smoother. I've seen the mods you've done so far on your bike and you will not have a problem with this LDO. Now price, ignition will be around $250 or so and you will have to replace the coil as well, another $150 or so. You'll have to decide what type coil setup you want, a single coil where you can use your stock cover or a dual setup that will cost much more because you will also need a new motor mount with coil bracket.

I will re-state my distaste for the Crane with some pictures to speak the volumes.

The crane ignition cam pick ups after only 200 miles

Notice its all plastic. The unit is imported from who knows where. It self gernaded.

I had the same when I installed the Thunderheart on my 05 Pitbull , the bike ran much much smoother and "No Gas Smell" !

Gasman,

I have a 2004 Ridgeback with mild mods to the carb, Martin Bros pipes and stock ECM. Anything special I need to change to go over to a Dyna 2000i with Single fire coils. I know I will have to mount the coils etc. Is there anything I am missing or is this a pretty straight forward installation on a nearly stock bike?

Any help or heads up would be appreciated. I looked throught the "How To" section but nothing turned up.

They aren't hard but irritating running the wires. You just use the pre-programmed timing curves.

for that much of a price difference I'd go with it. You always got paypal cover if something goes wrong. I bought my rocker boxes on ebay and they were cheap and they were great.

Just go ebay. If you are worried, call Dyna and check if Eastern Performence is a authorized dealer.

I would like to know as well. Sounds like a worthwhile improvement over the stock setup.

I can vouch for the quality of Dyna. I've been running a single fire, dual plug, manual timing adjust, Dyna setup in my 81 Shovel since 1989. At the top of the pic you can just barely see that I mounted the coils up in the tunnel of the gas tank so they're completely hidden and custom cut the lengths of the spark plug wires. I have not touched the timing on this bike in 20 years. Absolutely perfect!!!
