Adjusting valves?

I've read the how-to but have a question. When you get set on TDC, do you shorten the pushrod to let the lifter bleed down then finger tighten it up till it barely touches, then go 3-1/2 turns? If this is not correct, where do I start my 3-1/2 turns from.

That is not how I read it.

Set TDC. Adjust pushrod length so it doesnt turn. Then 3 1/2 turn. Then let it bleed down so that the pusrod can be turned with your fingers. If it can not be turned with fingers afetr bleed down something is wrong.

Just what I read. I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS!

I think Rhino's answer is more complete and correct. At TDC - set to just some resistence (Zero lash) then turns to your satisfaction (18 flats for me, 24 flats for some), then let her bleed donw.

Good catch Rhino
