A sad farewell

Some of you on here already know (DragginH, Raywood, Knotso) but to the rest of you that I have met and have yet to meet:

As of this past Friday I'm no longer with Big Dog. I have had a few generous offers from other companies in the motorcycle business but after a weekend of soul searching I have decided to leave the bike industry completely.

I have several offers outside the business and I think at this time I'm going to take a couple of weeks for myself (and my family) and then I will be joining a company out of Texas transporting heavy equipment and wind generator blades. I have many years experience driving heavy-haul equipment and pulling 125'+ long trailers transporting bridge beams. With the new field of wind energy exploding the companies moving the equipment for them are in desperate need of drivers and even more so drivers with experience pulling rear-steerable trailers which I have. Combine that with my 19 years driving and never having an accident or moving violation and they are making me some stupid-money offers.

Beginning Monday the 10th I will double my income and be driving during the day and sleeping at night. No a bad gig. I will however not be home much but if I do this for three years and take the extra income and apply it towards debt we will be totally debt free at the end of that time. Then I can play without worrying so much.

I have offers from other companies but some of them are heavy into construction materials and I just don't see the current state of the economy doing them any favors. The company I decided to accept the offer from is into Oil & Gas production equipment and Wind Energy and right now those markets are booming. Recession proof - not hardly but they should not see the slow-down as severly as companies who rely on building materials.

I will keep my account here and check in from time to time but not working at Big Dog, I'm no longer a Big Dog rider. As some of you already know, I'm one of those annoying squid's on a crotch rocket but hopefully you all will still let me post here from time to time.

Hey. In this day and age, if you can get a job, let alone one that pays more, let alone one that pays DOUBLE, you are doing great.

Yeah DragginH, I know how you feel but remember no tears!

Finn - Fortunately for me I have a background in aviation and trucking. Aviation is starting a slowdown right now so I'm staying away from that but I have an impecable record as far as truck driving goes so i can pretty much pick the company I want to work for.

Some are suffering right now but still there are others that are not affected nearly as bad. Even in a bad economy people will still be going to Wal-Mart and the grocery store and somehow all that stuff they push out the front in carts has to come in the back.

I have offers on the table from 8 different companies right now and I just started going over the pro's and con's with each one, looking at thier business model and freight base and narrowed my choices down from that. Then I took the two remaining and let them battle over wages.

I don't see oil & gas production slowing anytime soon, we all still drive cars/trucks/motorcycles. The wind energy business is just hitting it's heyday so thats going to be going for a few years yet (till the energy companies finally realize that it's less efficient and more costly than coal or nuclear but we won't argue that here). And finally, there's a lot of heavy equipment being moved around North America supporting the first two not to mention the military equipment coming and going that all has to be transported to and from the ports.

Anyhow, that's my perspective.

Don't Look at my Member!
I've got a whole lot of relatives in Hutchinson...right up the road from you and I have always been amazed how they made it.
My Grandpa and Uncle drove trucks their whole life and my Uncle still does. He trucks out of Medora.
I'm glad you've found something that will make your family debt free cause that is truly real freedom. Good luck to you!

Hey Man, Best of luck to you!

And you very likely will be bringing blades to my area (A new large wind farm has been approved and construction will start soon about 50 miles north of me near Milford, UT). I think you chose the right career direction!

Stop by and we'll have a beer together (PM me on the forum).
