A good fuel filter

This is how a bad day starts...

When your carb isn't working right... you drain the bowl into a glass jar and find a bunch of crap in it. You start to wonder...

So you drain the tank... pull the tank off....

And after its drained... you find... this very very fine silica type sand...

I SHIT you not!!

so I pull and clean the fuel line, gas tank, carb bowl, and petcock....

And now I have a good pic of what a petcock looks like...

Ok... well we know of one style of fuel filters that are 100% junk. As seen in Chacha's "Evil" Fuel filter thread

But after my sandy gas mis-hap. The whole idea of these big dogs being "special" and not being able to run a fuel filter was really getting to me. I mean, I even change the filter on my cars as I'm suppose to. But I'm not running one on my pride n joy. Stupid!

So I was talking to Vickie about it. She suggested I run the K&N filter that they run on ALL of their bikes. She said she has had one on her bike for over 7years now. KC Creations runs them even on their 124, and 131 CI motors. She assures me 2 thing.

1. It will not starve the carb/motor for fuel and will flow enough.
2. I will be AMAZED at what it catches.

Its a K&N 81-0231 Clear Body inline filter with 1/4" inlets, brass washable element. 1 3/4" long. MADE IN USA retail $9.99

A set of chrome hose clamp ends to dress up my already stainless steel braided hose.

But I keep hearing the chimes of others that have tried filters. So I picked up 2 different style 1/4" hose couplers. The white plastic one is from the plumbing section and the brass one is from the air line compressor hose section.

Then if it gave me any problems I could pull the fuel line on the side of the road, pitch the filter and re-connect everything without the filter. Way cool!

So with the line on the bike I marked where I wanted the filter. Just behind the ignition cover before the hose ventures between the jugs.

Cut the line.

Mock it up with the clamps facing the direction I want.

Install it and it turned out GREAT! I could barely get a pic of it and I KNOW its there!

Took the bike for a spin... even when holding the bike at 3500+ RPM and CRANKIN on the throttle it wasn't starving. Maybe Monday I'll take it for a spin down the highway and see if it gives me any funny biz.

Not bad for a under $20 piece of mind!!

Just a quick tip to anyone that has the s/s braided line, before you cut it with a hacksaw, wrap the hose in the area your going to cut with masking tape. It makes a cleaner cut and the braid will not fray.

Well I ran into a problem... whether it was a bad filter or one turn too much tightening the clamps but the niple was slightly ovaled and as you can see its obviously cock-eyed...

so it started to leak... So out went the plastic and in went a Pingel all metal, clean able filter... heck it even looks better...

Now the pingel does cost about $30 thru Vickie... but seems to be a much better setup from even the good little K&N.

Gas Man, good show with the Pingel. I seem to recall everyone used them or Russell back in the 80's on our HD's.

Alicat, Vickie works for KC Creations. KC builds some of the most beautiful bikes around and his brother is high up in the BDM organization. Vickie gives us all 10% off and free shipping on anything we want.

Later,
Ray

Thanks Ray... I can't take the credit. It was all Vickie's exlusive knowledge of these things. She is truly a guru.

Wow ...looking at the dates of the thread ..things sure have changed in the last year. "KC builds some of the most beautiful bikes around and his brother is high up in the BDM organization. Vickie gives us all 10% off and free shipping on anything we want." I think a lot of us miss Vickie and not so much the other one?

Hey Chopper Dave, thanks for pulling up this thread. I noticed when a changed my main jet that I had some crap that came out, so I was going to search for this thread. This thread dates back to when I first wandered in here and it has been a great learning experience.

Things sure did change in the last year though.

:zz2cents: Just a little FYI from personal experience, If you use the metal fuel filter which is a great filter, be aware of its location in relation to the engine. The engine heat will cause the gas in the filter to boil and vapor lock. BDM actually used these filters in the early days before the 107 engine became the standard engine. It didn't take long to figure out that the filter was the problem. Just make sure the filter is oriented so that when running the filter cartridge is exposed to airflow.

Vapor lock can also occur after riding a while and stopping to get gas, eat, take a leak, get a blow job, etc. The radiant heat from the engine is sufficient to vaporize the gas in the filter resulting in no flow of fuel to the carb.

They make refrence to that, Dogvet, in the instructions. However, I have had mine in between the jugs for 2 years... haven't had any problems.
