640 cam

I'm looking at an 07 k9 with a 640 cam installed and am wondering is it too much cam for everyday driving? I have searched and really haven't found much on it. Any help would be great. Thanks

IMO, the .640 cam isn't a good cam for everyday riding, unless you want to run high speeds. You can make power with it. The cam is a "late bloomer", which will have you rev the motor to take advantage of it. Low end torque is out the window.

O ya I've owned 3 dogs so far and by far that has been my favortie. Really wish I hadn't sold it.

I agree. I was thinking the 600 myself, but it doesn't start to open up until about 3,200 RPM's. 585 a better choice for all around use I think.

One more thing to think about 640's like more compression. It would be a poor match for low compression. I like to install 640's with headwork and compression set to 11-11.5. If thats how the motor is set up switching to a 585 would put cranking compression up pretty high. Which could cause other problems. You could always lower compression but figure in more money

I have a 640 with 11+ compression and it kicks in about 2600

Rough on the valve train but I really enjoy it

I talked to the tech at S&S regarding the 117 motor in my 2008 K9 and they recommended the 640 cam and shaving down the cylinder heads .040. Tech said the motor would give me many enjoyable miles with the cam and head work.

Not sure if this will give me performance in full range (low end, mid range and top end) without high rpm. Don't want to have to ride hard at all times. Any comments?

You could always change to a different cam... $150.

Being a S@S dealer since 1998 the best advise I can give you is to call them at 866 244 2673 and select option 2. Give Tech ur serial number of left side case and they will tell you what it came with and there recomendations. There is alot more that goes with a 640 cam than just installing to make it work correctly. Compression, Valve springs, Intake valve size etc. If its a stock BD 117 i wouldnt recommend it.
