Going to see Steve at bikers dream to install a new cam on my 2008 mastiff. He swears by the 600. i do not plan to do any jug cutting or spring change. Is the 585 a better bolt on choice or is the 600. what are your thoughts

from everything i have read, the woods 640 might make you happier. but at least go with the 600 if you have a carb. and make sure you have the right springs. if you don't want to change springs, throw out the idea of the 600.

In 08 the spring used was the sidewinder beehive spring. Its a single spring rated at .585 max lift. You can check it out on S&S website.

I did 585 it's the right choice for the 08' if you don't plan on doin' the springs and comp. change. You have a 546 in there right now and you will notice a big change:eek: if you have done the exhaust and intake without a lot of expense for now:2thumbs:

IMO:whoop:

I think the 585 is the way to go. i have V&H big radius on there with a PM supergas air cleaner. Just want the right bolt on for this size engine

The 600 is a proven cam no dispute. If all the changes have been made. But for bolt on horsepower at a low cost 585:2thumbs:

If you want some easy start, go with the S&S 585 easy start compression release cam. Great torque and the start is easy on the battery and fires up immediately.

Went with the .600 myself, but from the way people here have described, the .585 would probably work at least as well. I got the .600 off ebay for VERY little.
Have V&H BR & K&N filter and the bike runs awesome!
I think the main thing is to get rid of the .546 "EPA" cam.
As a side note, the bike starts WAY easier now, probably due the extra overlap, and is a lot smoother revving. Mileage has been similar.:2thumbs:

I put in the 585 a little over 34,000 miles ago---I love it-I think there is less noise up top too. Runs awesome---:flag:

"Iman"....dont mean to hijack your thread but while were on the subject of cams...does anybody know what comes standard on the
"107" S&S manual makes reference to 2 cam varations one being the "585" and the other being the "600"

My scoot is a 2003 pitbull and that 107 pulls strong from an idle too redline...

Thanks "55"

This is what the BDM Service Manual 1994 ~ 2004 says on page one.
"107-inch S&S (Big Bore) motors are identified by the SA (Special Application) stamped near the serial number on the motor cases. S&S 107 inch motors will have either the S&S 520 or 600 camshaft installed."
"107-inch TOTAL PERFORMANCE (TP) engines have either the TP logo or Big Dog logo located near the number boss. All TP motors use the CRANE 304 camshaft." Hope this helps.

http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/motor/16666-585-change.html Check out this post. I went with a Dave Mackie 580 and love it. Gobs of torque from idle to redline.
I did extensive search on this subject and if you follow knuclehead's linky above you find the results.
What it comes down to is the 08's have the lower rated valve springs and standard rocker arms. Therefore the .585 cam or similar is a good bolt in choice.

Any cam with a higher lift you'll need to raise compression, new springs, roller rockers to achieve the full performance of the cam. Assuming of course you've already changed you exhaust pipes and air filter. :zz2cents:
