500 mile service....

So I decided to do my own 500 mile service given that many on the board recommend doing it yourself and that it’s really not that difficult. Plus, I actually enjoy working on the bike. I don’t have the well equipped facilities like most of you (yes, I’m jealous), but I manage just fine.......and if I can do it, anyone can do it.
Dove into the fluid changes this past Saturday. I’ll continue with the rest as the week progresses. Everything went really well. Primary oil was really bad and trans oil just didn’t look right (kinda milky). See below.......

Fluids of choice......

Ready to start.....

Engine oil still nice and clean. Changed last at 300 miles.

......and filter...

New oil in...... no worries.....

Trans dipstick...... look at the color. I saw this and thought WTF?? Remember, this is the factory trans lube.

Out it comes......

Ran some fresh fluid through to try and get all that old stuff out......

YES..... it was very humid that day.......

Inside primary......not much to see....

Draining old oil........nasty....

Drain plug magnet with a mountain of gunk on it.....

Dirty, dirty........but no large metal shavings.......a good thing.....

Wipe down plug.....

Oh yeah...... and check out my air filter.........holy crap.....
Had to order one........ will be in on wed.

Still much to do, but the main stuff is done. Can't wait to see how it runs with all the new fluids.

Good job. People under estimate the bike jacks. I did the service how to on one before I got the lift.

That air filter didn't look too bad. They come with that yellow color in case you didn't know. Just blow it out (from inside outward) and just re-use.

Wow Chris, I had no idea the air filter had that rust yellow color right out of the box. Well, I guess I'll have a spare when the new one comes in tomorrow, and it wasnt cheap either...:bang:
Thanks for clueing me in....

TJ.......lol......your right. I thought of the tappet screen as soon as I finished putting the new oil in........DOH....
I guess I could go back and do it, but I gave it a good cleaning at 300 miles so it shouldnt be all that bad.

Just ordered some of that Cable Life Spray lube for all the cables. Should be delivered in about 3 to 4 days.
The only thing I may need to take it somewhere for is the fork bearing inspection and repack. I have no clue how to do that. I know how to check it, I just don't know how to take it all apart if I need to. Never done it before.
No worries..... one step at a time. There's a real good shop around the corner from me that will help me if needed.

put 23oz in the transmission. I see you got 2 bottles of primary fluid - only put 1 in. I would also probably stay away from HD motor oil - I've heard not good things - as for Spectro :2thumbs:

Make sure you do not overfill the trans it will vent fluid out when hot and get on frame and back wheel, and mark its spot. You bought synthetic for the trans good idea, but what about engine and primary?Check out AMSOIL,good stuff.

One thing you didn't do or should I say can't do. Big Dog requires that a digital download is performend with that service. Especially the 500 mile service. Might want to get that performend before your way beyond 500 miles. If so get it done at the 2500 mark. I have seen warranty denied due to failure to have that service performend. Also when you have it performend request a copy of the read out.

Yeah.... I did alot of research and Spectro seems to be the hot lick. I did only put 1 quart in the primary. Just happened to walk outside with 2 quarts........don't know why....lol
Also measured out 20 oz of trans oil. It just didnt look like 20 oz came out of the thing when I drained that milky Factory fluid out......I could be wrong.....
I'm sticking to conventional motor oil until I get a couple thousand miles logged on the bike. Some say that it can take as many as 3000 miles for these motors to be broken in right. I then may go to synthetic, but the guys at Fullhouse Cycles "would recommend against it" as I was told. Who knows.....
Also.....I wrote to BD and asked them about doing my own service or having it done at a qualified shop close by. I explained that the reason I don't take it to an Authorised Dealer was because the 2 closest to me are both about 2 hours away, and me without a trailer. (BlackDog in Pa. & Fullhouse in Va.) They said it was fine that either I or another shop do the work, but to try to get it in to do the EHC scan as soon as I am able. If the bike is running well after I'm finished, I may just feel confident enough to ride it out to Fullhouse and get the scan done. I've never even so much as cracked the throttle to any degree and kept the RPM's well within the required range of the warrentee police, so it should'nt be a problem.
Thanks for everyones input:cheers:

IMO the motor will be run in long before 3000 miles and that is BDM just doing everything they can to protect warranty claims. S&S say their engines break in period is 1000 miles which sounds much more normal. As for the synthetic in the motor you will get lots of different views on that but I THINK that S&S ship their motors new with synthetic.

Good job! One thing I might recommend (and a lot here use them) is a oil scavenger, you'd be surprised the amount of old oil you can push out with that, I got more than a quart of dirty nasty oil out. :2thumbs: oh and maybe a cooly for that beer, keep her frosty cold! :)
