3rd set of plugs in 600 miles

Took my pup in for its first visit at the dealership at 1200 miles. I did this for warranty purposes, usually do most repairs and maintenance myself. For the first 1200 miles I had no major problems, I did let them know about an occaisional backfire, but that was all. They said they adjusted the carb, since I am on my 3rd set of plugs. I have searched and did not see a thread on adjusting the carb. I have grown up around jet boats and hot rods, if it had a holley on it I could tune it in my sleep, however this is my first go around with a bike. Any help would be gladly accepted! I have a set of V&H pipes coming, I know that I need the carb jetted, how easy is this, should I take and have it dyno tuned, or are the jet kits right on for a stock bike? Thanks

When and if you adjust your carb. It's very similar to adjusting a holley in it's manor of typical characteristics.
But as far as the plugs go, I've had much better "suckcess" :lol:, using the NGK Iridium Plugs. DCPR7EIX, stock no. 6046

Sounds like they're fouling and that's what starts it popping.
A lot of dealers like to set the bikes up a little fat for break in. But that's just an old wives tail. But evidently, someone is going a little too rich and fouling out his plugs.

Just my thoughts here tough.

Once the porcelain on a plug gets contaminated from fuel fouling (carbon impregnation) it will never be the same, they break down much easier from that point on.
Your accelerator pump volume adjustment may be set too rich also?

Gabriel, are you refering to his fuel/air mixture?

If so, that is a seperate screw on the body of the carb.

You hear the bike backfiring and coughing? He did not warm the bike up before he took off on it and started twisting the throttle repeatedly. That can take out head and base gaskets in the motor if repeated enough time. That is what i am referring to with abuse.
Just my .02 cents though:D

Reddog....can you post a pic of the fouled plugs....just want to see how it's breathing....:up:

My bet would be "SOOT" black if he's having the fouling issues that he's describing.
It's been my experience that you won't be able to tell much of anything about how it's "breathing" or how it's jetted and tuned from fouled plugs like that.
Install "new"plugs, re-adjust carb after bringing engine to normal operating temp., test ride, then check plugs when everything feels and sound good. :2thumbs:

Try this first. This is where most problems occur!

It has been proven that starting a bike with the choke and then letting it set idling while it warms up will file the plugs rapidly. Best way to warm and start is, choke on, two twists on the throttle, press start. Release the choke immediately and "Slightly" hold the idle up while feeling the side of your head until you feel warmth. This prevents unnecessary enrichment from filing the plugs. Never let the bike sit on choke while running! If you say you know boats and hot rods, imagine doing that with them what would happen. I just finished building a blown 350 with two Edlebrocks 750s. Pieces of shit, but its what he wanted until he filed his 6th set of plugs. They allow to much fuel at a idle that can't be prevented, unlike a holley, kinda like idling with your choke on all the time. Two 750 Holleys now, runs like a champ. Hard headed boy!
