250 tire

Not sure what to do. I picked up a nail in my 250 tire, put a plug in it, holding up fine. Tire has about another 3~4 thousand miles life left. Heard to much crap about the Avon Cobra, to want one of them. Metzler does NOT make a 250 (only a 240). The only other tire I have found, is the Dunlap Elite 3. They don't look too awful bad, anyone have any luck (good or bad) with the Dunlaps??? Would puting a "boot patch" on the inside, be better than the plug? Or, how about a tube? If anyone makes one in the 250 size. I have not had any luck, trying to find a "new old stock" Venom. Any advice would be appreciated.....

The issue with the Cobra's seems to be with the 300 guys and haven't heard of any negative responsed about the 250. Mine is going on about 15,000 miles if I remember right!

I'm replacing mine (when the time comes) with another Cobra.

:cheers::2thumbs::cheers:

I've got about 3000 on a new set of Cobra's (250), and so far they're doing fine. I hope mine do as well as Ray's!!:2thumbs:

I would bet Rays tire mileage goes way down what with the contents of the pavement and heat down yonder.

I have had a set of the Avon Cobras and have had absolutely no problem whatsoever with either of them.......

I put the dunlop on my 03 chopper, and no problems. Real close to the belt, so i put a tiny tiny spacer between the pulley and wheel and no issues.

Just like the Pirate says everything I heard was with the 300 tire not the 250,,,, of course I don't have 15,000 on my 250 yet,,,I haven't even broke 5,000 on the scooter yet and it still has the original Avon 250 on it,,, I don't do burn outs and ride like an old guy...

When I replace it this winter I will get another Avon,, I replaced the front last year at the end of the season cause it was dry rotting on the sides,, the new one does great,,,

I know your looking for a 250 rear tire, but anyone looking for a 280 get a hold of bikergarage101.com. They are selling them for $100. This place bought out all the bigdog and iron horse stock. They have everything. Go check it out.

my front cobra held up fine. The rear is totally worn at only 2000 miles. 2000 miles is unacceptable. I am switching to the Dunlap elite and see how many miles I can get out of them

Looking forward to retirement
I have no problem with my 250 cobra. Watch the plug and tube!!! You can't run Dyna Beads with either!!!

What Looks Best?

I don't have any recommendations; but I need a rear tire as well.

I have gone through two Avon rears: 250/40 R18 81H, Venom & Cobra; stock size equipment in 2004 and biggest widest that would fit not counting brand variations within the 250 size... Since I can only fit a 250 wide and don't want to go 240; my only choices are the Avon Cobra 250, or the Dunlop Elite 3 250.

I am considering a Dunlop Elite 3 same size but heard the Dunlop measures out 3mm wider at widest point -- extremely close fit on my 2004 with left side belt drive. I have also heard some members get the Dunlop and shave/trim a millimeter off the belt side sidewall to clear, others don't; with perfect alignment I think mine will clear a Dunlop OK...

IMHO
I think the Metzler (no photo) has the best tread design and look; but the only size they offer close to a 250, is a 240 -- and we know how size counts! (Metz 260 is a no-go for mine)

I think I like the Dunlop look second best; and I have had Avons since 2004...
So let me know what would look best? _______

PS: I have seen a Dunlop Elite 3, 240 in lieu of a 250 and it don't look right! too skinny! 240 Metzler not as bad but still looks too skinny beneath the rear fender.
PPS: Update, 5-25-15; I have had the Dunlop Elite 3 on for afew months; everything feels as good as the Avon.

Only issues: the Dunlop does not fit as closely on the Big Dog wheel sidewall as the Avon; Dunlop leaves about a 3/32 gap between tire and wheel at sidewall.

The Dunlop is slightly wider and taller; had to shave the sidewall 1/32 on each side. It does "rub" on the fender when I bottom out and a stone is left kicked up by the tire and temporarily lodges in the tire center line and fender... left a scratch mark on my new tire...

Come on guys... I run a 250 Avon Viper on the rear, it's 12 years old with plenty of meat left.
BUT, it only has 6700 miles on it. I ran the Dragon last Saturday as hard as I could and NO problems.
For those who don't know what the Dragon is it's 318 turns (some call then switchbacks) in 11 miles.
It is a challenge without a doubt, as long as your "pucker string" don't get ran over in the process.
