2010 Wolf - Medallion Speedo Issue

Hi Guys,

Back again looking for some technical advice please. My medallion speedo is playing up, the LED screen at the bottom which has the mileage on it and so on keeps either becoming illegible or else going completely blank. It's normally fine when I start the bike, it shows the BD logo and then all the data but once it's been running for a while it plays up and then just goes blank. Is this a speedo issue do you think or EHC? And if it's the speedo any idea if it can be fixed or not? It appears to be a sealed unit so I'm thinking not. All advice very gratefully received.

Its the speedo and not the ECH, I don't know about the Wolf speedo but my 07' was sealed and none repairable, I replaced it with a Dakota Digital:whoop::old2:

Thanks for the information BWG, I had assumed it was the speedo itself and not the EHC but that thing controls so many functions I wasn't entirely sure so I'm gratefull for the confirmation. Do you happen to know if the DD replacement fits into the Wolf housing? I have looked around and from what I can see you need the external LED RPM ring for the DD to fit and I don't have that.

Mine looks like this by the way: Speedo.jpg

Man I love my bike but three electrical issues in under three years is getting annoying, why did they make the electrics so damn complicated?

Is this a closer look of yours? If it is the Dakota Digital won't work, your right about the tach ring

The back shell is the same, the front is not. You would need the front and tach to use the Dakota.

Unfortunately medallions are not available anymore.

If you are serious about it, I would be interested in the medallion as is, and perhaps working out a swap for the housing and tach.

Yes BWG that is a much better picture of mine, it's the digital readout at the bottom that keeps going on the fritz. It started off by saying big dog big dog big dog, etc, etc in tiny letters then it just went blank, now it usually comes on when I fire the bike up (but not always) then goes off after five minutes or so, it just goes blank or to a single black line. Most irritating because other than that it's great.

Jwooky that is most kind of you and I may take you up on your offer at some point. I'm currently trying to source a new one and have actually contacted Medallion to see if they have any laying around in their factory and if that doesn't work out then my next move is to have my tech look at it and make sure it isn't just a loose wire. Finding people who know anything about this bike here is kinda tricky but luckily I bought the full service manual from BDPP before they went under so I have some clue as to how it goes together. If I can find a new one and swap it out you can have my old one for free.

I contacted Medallion last year about one and the manager said they scrapped the tooling did not have a single one.:oldbang:

Thanks for the offer as well. There was one on ebay by DOC a while back, so you may want to check with him.

I guess you were right Jwooky, I got the same response from Medallion today which was disappointing. You would think it was worth them keeping some around because I'm sure they would sell them pretty steadily but then what do I know about the speedometer business.

So, anyone got a Medallion kicking about in a box somewhere I can buy from them?

Amazingly enough, my Medallion speedo just went completely blank while riding in the Blue Ridge on my 05 Chopper last weekend. Needle is stuck at 45mph (speed I was going when it quit). All else is blank. Checked the red wire at the connector under the tank and I am getting power there. Any troubleshooting help would be appreciated. If not ,I too am looking for a replacement.

Update on my Medallion speedo issue. I contacted technical support via email. They were very willing to help until I informed them that this was a Bigdog model. After that....crickets!!! Realizing I was on my own, I took the time to really troubleshoot my Medallion speedo problem. Traced every one of the little wires out of the 2 sets of connectors. I found 2 that had rubbed through the shrink tubing and insulation. Fixed that and continued to trace them backwards. Found one wire (ran all by itself) to the side of the bike OPPOSITE of the EHC unit. It had a 2 amp fuse that was blown! Replaced the fuse, and VOILA, she's fixed!! Just a note to you Medallion speedo users, there are 2 sets (one big and one small) of wiring connectors for this unit. One set (of 2 connectors) in the speedo bucket, one set (of 2 connectors) on the backbone under the tank. EACH connector set has a power wire. That's right, there are TWO sources of power for this unit!! All but one of the wires run to the EHC side, BUT THAT ONE WIRE, coming from the smaller connector, runs to the power post under the left side cover and has the 2 amp fuse!! Hope this might help somebody down the road!

When I replaced my EHC with a DOC's unit, that one wire was the only one that wasn't listed in the instructions. He had never encountered that before, but once I sent the harness back to be re-pinned for the right speedo, we eliminated that wire. Actually, I kept a short section of that wire for future use if I decide to hook up some accessory that needs to be ignition hot.
