2008 Mastiff - Running Rich...

Hey folks,

Went for about a 100-mile ride yesterday with a couple of my brothers and a couple of friends. We all met at my house and I led the group out of the neighborhood - was in the lead for about 2 - 3 miles after which my oldest brother took over. As we pulled up to a stop sign for him to pass me up he pulled up next to me and told me that my bike was running rich - said he could smell it.

Sort of makes me wonder if this was also part of the issue when I thought I'd run out of gas last week.

Is this simply cause the bike is new or is it something that I should take in to have the BDM service look at before the 500 mile checkup?

Oh, I should also mention that my enricher lever was all the way down - I'd made sure of that....

My fuel switch was all the way open, which I presume is the way it's supposed to be?

I see you have the VH pipes, what are filter do you have and what jets were changed out when the pipes were installed?

is it carbed or injection? have you confirmed its running rich? have you looked at the plugs and how did it run? - I don't know what your issue was with running out of gas but I don't see the connection...unless perhaps your plugs are badly fouled but I should think if they were that bad you would have had other symptoms of richness first - plenty of threads on here on this stuff

Not to discredit your brother but carbuerated vehicles stink no mater what. As said pull the plugs and have a look.

Yup - you should feel it lightly click into a detent when it is fully open - but don't forget to turn it off anytime the bike sits, particularly indoors. Turn it ON before you start, turn in OFF after you shut down.

Excellent questions & recommendations - lemme go through, do the checks, etc. Yea, not sure about the "rich" smell my brother mentioned, bike seems to be running great...

Maybe all just the results of it being a carburated bike? I'm also assuming that they'll check all this stuff when I take it in for the 500-mile checkup, ya? Especially if I mention it...

Thanks all!
