2008 Bigdog Pitbull (Reliability and Maintenance)

Hello Friends,

I'm a new member here - I recently got a 2008 Pitbull with S&S 117 cubic inch with less than 2000 miles. I got it from a different state and transported to Washington.

It looks and rides good. But I noticed some oil coming out of the rocker box after I was riding for 10 miles:bang:.
I took it to a mechanic and they told me the inner rocker box corner (bolt seating body) is broken and it caused the leak. We ordered a new rocker box and gaskets and waiting....

Hope to get some suggestions for my questions that I'm bothered with.

1) How common is the oil leak issue for 2008+ models and how to prevent it?
2) Anyone had issues with Synthetic engine oils (leak issues)? My mechanic and few others told me that the synthetic oil become thinner in the hot temps and lead to more leaks?
3) What brand oil you guys suggest from your experience?
- Should I go for Synthetic or Non synthetic?
4) Also, I'm having trouble shifting to 'NEUTRAL' (I revved to 2K rpm but that still didn't do it)- any advice?
5) I'm planning to ride 30 mins of stop and go traffic (any precautions or suggestions to keep the motor from too much heat?) Any consequences of local rides?
6) also, I noticed a # "43498" flashes in the place of default speedo reading when I turn on the ignition, then it shows the actual miles - wondering what that default speedo # represents?

Thanks you all in advance for your time:flag:!

The only problems I heard was getting a new back tire for those models. Everything else is solvable. But then again, I heard they were producing those tires again

Welcome. Speaking from experience...the 2008 Pitbull is the baddest Big Dog of them all. :whoop:

Have close to 8k on her...not a drop leaks.
I always use Mobil 1 Synthetic...the best.

That neutral thing perhaps you just need to get the hang of it. Usually I try to roll to the stop sign and then click to N as I downshift.

Enjoy my friend. This site is the best for info and help. They guys/gals on here are awesome.

Try flipping the throttle right before you try to get it in neutral or while you are still rolling. My BD is the hardest bike I've ever owned to get into neutral.

Welcome from Texas
It is hard to find neutral from a dead stop. (real short shifter throw)
I have a hard time finding it from second (while rolling)
If I get it to first while still moving , I find it every time.

If the clutch is adjusted right it will go in and out of neutral just like a Honda, It is tricky to find the sweet spot:up:
