The local shop did some checking yesterday and came back to me telling me my new EHC would be $385, and Big Dog has them in stock. From what I read here, shouldn't the newer version be closer to $500, and aren't they backordered all over the place? Can someone tell me the part number for a newer EHC, just to be sure these guys don't try to sell me another 2004 EHC?

Believe you are looking for part 171-000010-00 which as I understand is the "standard" replacement unit for the field. This unit is for use ONLY on carbureted dogs. It requires a modification to the plug ports for the 2004 bikes. I was shown a "daughter board" adapter to make this modification so that it takes the needed two plugs from the EHC and provides a single plug output for the 2004 harness. This modification may have a different BDM part number.

What I've heard is the field ain't keen on modifing the new EHC to work with the 2004 models. Thus the shortage and scramble to find ANY 2004 EHC around on a shelf. For me, it's such a logistics nightmare, that when mine goes out again, the bike is getting re-wired -- the EHC is too much of a pain in the ass to trouble shoot.

CURRENT EHC INFORMATION SHEET
Part # 171-000010-00: Tall, dual board EHC with
semi-hard, black potting material.
Introduced for the 2007 model year
production and used as a field and recall
replacement. This EHC will eventually be
used in all carbureted production models.
Uses a USB plug for diagnostic software
and has thru-hole LEDs that protrude from
the top of potting material.
NOTE: As of 12 JUN 2006, this is the only
EHC available for field replacement in 2005 and
up carbureted models. Dealers should use up any
of the previously listed EHCs in their inventory
except the 170-000001-00 EHC with soft,
clear potting material which was affected by
recall 06V-305.
171-000010-00.

I was told by Big Dog that the newer ones aren't anymore reliable than the older ones, they are just different. I am on my 3rd older style and all is good. Who knows.

Easy for you to say Rain, someone else did it for you! Actually, as long as the rest of the EHC continues to work, I may just leave it as it is. Headlight switch setup is going just fine. This is the last summer for this bike anyway.

Not sure what is going on with the EHC, but I have been waiting nearly a month to get one and ever time I check with the dealer, they tell me BD has them on Back-Order still.

I will say that the one I am replacing was reliable and did not have any issues with it, the only problem was where I broke a pin when I re-hook up the 50pin connectors and it is only for the oil pressure lite. Everything else is working fine and I did put a oil pressure gage on it.

I called a bunch of dealers and got 3 different part numbers, one said I will need a harness that the other 2 knew nothing about, and have gotten prices ranging for $212 to $385. Anyone know who I can call or email so I can get the straight scoop on what I need?

Did you try Nelson or Vicky. Vicky did sell this stuff for years and she knows her stuff.

GasMan,

Yes I am when I get a chance, though I have been busy for the last couple of weeks. Riding time has been taking a hit more than I like, but I am hoping that I may get a few days free next week and either head to SC for a day or two of Myrtle or possibly SW NC to hook up with a friend that is coming in from Iraq.

Sorry for the delayed response:

BDM170-00094 is available and that shows to fit all 2003 models. Pricing on that shouldn't be over $290.00 ... we have them for $268.19

BDM173-000037-00 is the EHC for the 2004 models. THIS is the killer one and runs anywhere from $560.00 - $600.00 depending on where you get it and availability. BDM just raised the price again (so you guys that bought from me earlier saved some coin! ).

Riding my 04 .... if mine fries ... I'll have to seriously consider rewiring. I don't know that it would be the same decision if it wasn't for the cost of the EHC.
