I would start with a fresh battery, especially since it's a new to you bike, who knows when it was replaced and now you'll know going forward how old it is. If battery is getting hot its either shot or you are just keeping the start button pressed too long for it to heat up. Either way it may just be the battery.

This may sound crazy but did you push the run button then hit the start? Every time you turn off the ignition, you have to hit the run button then the start to crank it.. Just saying.. sometimes I forget to hit the run button and I say what the hell s it now.. then I remember the correct sequence to start it...

What year is your BD?? I had to replace my Electronic Harness Controller.. I have a 06 Mastiff and had it checked by BDM in Wichita, I live in Tulsa, which made it easy to ride up there and make a day of it, and I got a clean bell of health as I had several glitches with starting. Then one day no start no nothing.. I went with Dead One Customs. Very easy install and no issues in four years. I'm not saying that your EHC is bad, but I would have it checked out by a reputable cycle shop to make sure that you have no issues with your EHC. Also you could have a bad coil and no spark but the shop should be able to find your issue and give you options. Also check you spark plugs and make sure that they are fresh and the gap is set properly. It takes three things to make it run Air, Gas and Spark. Also check the carb, I'm guessing that it is not fuel injected, and see if you can smell gas. That way you know that gas is going to the engine. Again I don't know the age of your ride but check the plug wires and replace if they seem worn. Just my rambling...With any of the issues above and for ignition module issues the engine will not turn over. Good luck and let us know what the issue was. It helps us old timers stay on top..
