2006 Mastiff - Speedo working/not working

I've noticed lately that sometimes my speedometer is not working at all, when I first start the bike, the speedo does the pre-check (where the needled pegs out and seats back), but once the front wheel is moving...nothing. However, if it warms for a bit, and I turn the bike off and restart it, the speedo starts to work again.

Any ideas as to the cause would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Battery is the first thing to check. If the volts drop below 12.2 I believe, the speedo will act up. This is a known issue. Use the search function you will find lots of info on this. I'm having a similar problem as we speak. Mine will will sweep and work anywhere from 3 min to 20 min into my ride and then just freeze up. I've checked the pickup at the tranny, taken the speedo apart to make sure all wire were connected etc. The only thing left for me is to remove the tank and make sure I don't have a short somewhere along the harness. I always keep on the trickle charge. Driving me crazy.

Just fixed my 08 Mastiff
Checked the wiring, cleaned the sensor and while I was there saw the field cable to the starters insulation was for shit so I put 2 layers of high temp shrinkwrap on it.
After all that worked like it should.
But if it ever does die I will be getting a Dakota digital as a replacement.

Don't think the needle pegs out on a power-on reset, maybe vertical?

Sounds like maybe a sensor if you see it start working after it gets warm. Pull it, clean it, try it, replace it.

Do you keep the battery on a tender at all times you are not riding? Like the others have said it most likely is a low voltage situation. I had the same thing happen. Started using the tender and haven't had a problem since. It does make you want to get a Dakota though. First bike I have had that requires a tender on the battery if it sits over night.
