2006 K9 with 280 rear tire??

I am getting ready to purchase a K9 and have looked at several bikes and have one in particular that is the top contender. There is one thing that is making me apprehensive. The bike I am looking at has a 280 rear tire and the owner (2nd owner) says that is the way it came. I have triple checked my research and I do not see anywhere that the ’06 was offered with a 280. So, here is the question:

Did Big Dog offer a 280 and I just don’t see it listed anywhere?

Could the original owner have mounted a 280 on the original rim?

Any help would be much appreciated… I really like this bike, but want to make sure it is all correct.

To my knowledge 06 K-9 was 300mm tire. Not 280mm. I same sure others will chime in and offer the correct answer. Hey if you are looking at being a dog owner go ahead and do an intro.:D

I figured I would do an "intro" once I actually had the bike ;)

I guess the only remaining question is if you can mount a 280 on the stock wheel. I am assuming this is possible and maybe the original owner did it for handling or cost purposes. I would just mount a 300 again once it is due.

if there is a 280 on the K9, someone other than the factory put it on there. always has been a 300.

is the tire an avon or a metzler? metzlers tend to run just a hair wider than the avon. not by much but they are a little wider making rubbing the belt a problem. that may be the reason it has a 280 if it is a metzler.

would like to know myself.

My bike is an 06, and as far as I know they only offered a 300. Mine is a 300 as well.

You're talking 11.8" vs 11". I'm sure a 280 will fit fine on a 10.5" wheel, but you are not going to have a very high profile tire, and you're going to change the riding habits on the bike b/c you're going to have more rubber on the road. The tire isn't going to "balloon" as much as it would if it were a 300mm tire. Instead of having maybe 4" of tire on the road, it may be like 8" of tire on the road. It'll be harder to turn I'm sure.

Another thing is different brands sizes are kind of funny. A 280 in one brand may be equivalent to a 300 in another brand.

Well, the mystery is solved... he had just looked at it incorrectly. It has a 300 Avon and I am going to get it this weekend :)

Congrats on the purchase and you can still do an intro before you have the dog. Post pics when you get her.
