2005 Pitbull Running Like a Dream!

Hey all,
Just bought a 2005 Pitbull with just over 1000 miles on it. $12k...very happy with that! Bought it from a friend who never rode it. Was not all fun and games though....a week before I was going to buy it the ECH toasted. He took it to a local guy who had a good reputation with harleys. A Wire-plus was purchased and the guy proceeded to stall and put us off for about 5 weeks. Friend and I talked to made the call to get the bike towed to my house. That's when the fun began!

When I popped the seat off I realized how much of a hack this guy was. His first step was to cut all of the plugs off the Wire-plus and the bikes wiring harness! Called him and he said the Deutsch connectors were crap. Good grief! Any of you that have done the Wire-plus know the instuctions rely on the harness being intact so you can ID the same-color wires. Had to ID each and every wire and redo the whoe thing. Took a while but boy did I learn a lot about the bike! Still have an issue with the tach, but I'll resolve that when I take the tanks off.

Next problem. First ride went great. Next ride, bit longer at 30 mins or so didn't go so well. At about 20 mins in the bike started to sputter and stall. I pulled off and let it sit for a bit while I looked it over. Checked the Wire-plus and made sure I had gas. Started right back up after 5 mins and I took off. 5 mins later, same thing. $&#%@!!! I did the same again and limped it home. Came here and looked up stalling and saw a lot of "gas tank vapor lock" threads. Popped the hose off the carb and turned the gas on. Nothing. Well at least I knew what it was... I have a split tank. Left cap is air tight, right cap is vented. Checked the crossover line on the bottom of the tanks and it was plugged with crap. Bingo. Also found that gas stops flowing once it gets to about 1" left in the tank. Figure that's the filter screen. Will replace later. Filled her back up and off I went. 30 mins later...still crusing along nice nice!

Still have some work to do and need to do a full cleaning, but at least I'm on the road! Stoked to be a part of the BD family!

Welcome and Congrats on the scooter. At least the ECH is close to being forgotton right off the bat.

I had a tach / sputtering issue as well and found my issue by wiggling the wires with the key on trying to get it to act up. The wire on the battery side of the breaker had come lose, still looked good until I touched it, and was intermetitly losing connection. I reconnected all that and have good to go since.

Recomminds the Wiggle test on the wires until it acts up.

I wish I had more money.
Yes on the reserve. All the way one way is on. All the way the the other is off. In the middle is reserve.

When the dog is running good, there's no better feeling! Having the WP will save you headaches down the road. I changed mine out while it was still running good. Just peace of mind. Hopefully, your TP rocker boxes won't give you any problems. Some do, some don't.

Well thanks guys! Learn something new every day. Feel a bit dumb now... Have to admit, thought you guys were pulling my leg on the reserve thing so I looked it up before posting back. Lol!
