2005 Mastiff advice!

Hello,

My dad gave me his 2005 Mastiff due to illness, and I'm trying to get it running after it sat unused for about 5-6 years. He mentioned it was running fine the last time he rode it, but it wouldn't start the next time he tried.

The first thing I noticed was the dead battery, so I replaced it and the fuel. When I tried to start it, I got one crank, and then the horn honked and the turn signals flashed like the flashers were on. My next step is to check for spark on the plugs.

Is there anything else I should look at or test? Could it be the ignition coil?

Thank you for the advice and your time!

These bikes need a fully charged battery. I would charge the battery. If you use jumper cables never have the car running! Only hook up the cables to the battery of a car not running. Or you can take the battery out and sit it next to the bike. Only hold the start button on for about 5 seconds at a time. You might have to clean the carb?

When it does start, count on a puddle of oil. Its sat for quite a while so its expected. X2 on the battery. Get a Deka ETX20L or equilivent. Gotta be charged fully. Oh and welcome from Kansas.

I bought a new fully charged battery, and nothing.
Does anything come on when you turn the key on? Headlight , speedometer, or anything? Look under the seat and see if any lights are on the EHC. Do they flask on solid ? You will get the help you need here but, you must be detailed in your explanations of symptoms. It is difficult to diagnose problems without seeing the bike but, if you are detailed in your description of what is happening it can be done. Also welcome and good luck.

Yes, headlights, speedometer, turn signals all come on when I turn the key on. When I hit the start button it cranks once then stops, and then the horn honks and turn signals flash (not sure if that is related to the problem or not). I will have to look tonight if any lights are flashing on the EHC. I am not familiar with EHC, what if any lights should be flashing on the EHC or lights flashing in general a bad thing?

Just for shits n giggles, unplug the EHC and add some di-electric grease. Replug n see if ya got the same trouble. Maybe a connection issue, maybe the EHC toasted.....?

Charge the battery fully. Should be 12.8V (what battery did you get -- some are just not good enough for a BDM) If you don't have DMM (digital multi-meter -- get one, you'll need it -- can get them for under $10)
Hold down the compression release in the center of the head and press run press start and see what it does.
If the CR's are stuck that engine gets real hard to start without a perfectly good battery.
What temperature is the enviroment you are trying to start the bike in (ambient room or outside temp if outside)
The original EHC's tended to fail more oft than not when cold (I lost 2 that way.)
Be precise in what you do and tell us, don't skip anything
Do one change at a time to easier isolate the problem and solution.

Thank you for the info. this is the battery I got: Motorcycle Battery YTX20HL-BS, UPLUS EB20H-3 Snowmobile UTV ATV YTX20L-BS YUAM320BS Maintenance Free Sealed AGM Powersports Compatible with Yamaha Honda Suzuki Harley-Davidson Kawasaki Jet Ski
* I have DMM, I will double the volts on the battery
* I have not tried holding down the CR's
* In Colorado tried starting in my garage, probably in the 40's maybe 50's

EHC = electronic harness control. Switches are not rated @ 12v. The ehc is the voltage controll for all bike functions. If it takes a dump, you have nothing. It is located on the left side of the battery. It has a row of lights running long ways. Has 2 plug-ins. Curtis at wildsteedworx.com can test it for you.

OK, the EHC may be on it's way out.
If battery is ok, and compression release hold down doesn't help, try this.
Recharge battery
Take a hair dryer and gently warm up the ehc so that is say 80 degrees. Don't be too agressive, hair dryers are really HOT
Try to start it with the warm ehc -- if that works you'll likely need to replace the EHC
Report back and we can point you towards the option that exist to get it back on the road.

My wife's carb mastiff builds huge compression especially with the choke engaged......been using a lithium x2 on both her bike and my k9 for 3yrs now with no problems......fuel in tank is bad.....drain......carb is stuck unless you have removed float bowl cleaned and reset float.....once fuel system is reestablished pull plugs and crank over with no fuel check for spark in dark...probably get 2 plugs gap then install...use antiseize and torque 16 foot pounds.....the flashing tach/ flashers and horn are telling you you're batt has insufficient amperage to cycle the starting system and all the rest....thus we went to lithium as we grew tired of the big dog battery dance.....once you get the bike to turn over easily turn on the fuel and set choke....lastly, your voltage regulatory REQUIRES inspection (silver doodad between down tubes behind front tire) your bike, as my wife's were involved in a recall that was because of that component actually catching fire. The bike does need to be running for this to occur so get that thing inspected. Better yet replacement. If you think you're gonna just wing it without a service manual you're doomed......they're easy to fix and maintain but require tools and research unless you're a bike mechanic....
