2005 Chopper DT w/ starting issue

Hello all,

Compared to some I really haven't had any issues and the ones I've had I found all the help i needed here. So last week i get the click,click no start then it starts. It has developed into start (maybe) click click......click click click no start, click click click click ............... well you get the picture. So I've been doing some reading and it appears it could be a variety of things but the question is what is the most common?? I almost dismantled the bike one time just to find out the bulb in the headlight was burned out. With me it's normally something simple. Battery is new and good, headlight bright as the sun and all coneections clean and tight. Oh yea anybody got anything to say about BDM performance new PDM EHC replacement?????????????? Hmmmmmm?????????????? May the good advice begin and as always

Did you load check that new battery and what CCAs is the battery rated at? Just a hint, new isn't always good!

Sorry when I said new i guess i mean newer...been in the bike about a year...last one five years and was still turning the bike over just fine when I replaced it...just thought it was time ya know??

Put the battery on the tender and let it charge fully, should get about 12.7 to 12.8 volts on an ohmmeter when fully charged. Take it off the tender for an hour and see what the battery holds for a charge. Shouldn't drop more than a few 12.6... Check your connections for tightness, cleanliness and no frayed wires both at the battery and starter... That's a start, simple first

Thank you for the info but I have checked out most of the usual subjects. I'm thinking and mostly hoping it's the starter relay but due to a move my service manual is in a box................somewhere in the abis. So can you or anyone tell me where the starter relay is on a 2005 Chopper DT????????????????

I don't know about the 05 dog location of stuff.
I would just pull the wire on the starter coil and see if it has full voltage when you hit the button. If it does everything is good to the coil. Pull the coil cap and clean the contacts and then try it again.

Update to starter issue

So today I pull the starter to clean contacts.......what a bitch just getting it out. all looked good inside the starter but that little wire that goes from the solinod to the starter motor itself was very corroded where it bolts to the solinod and all the rubber on the wire was wasted....like peeling off. I'm going to take it to somebody that rebuilds starters for a living and have them replace that wire and check out the rest of it to make sure all is well before i reinstall. will keep you all updated as I progress.

Starting issue Resolved

So here is what i did to resolve my bikes starting troubles. Pulled starter and inspected contacts which turned out to be very pitted but not burnt or dirty. Took starter to a re-build shop anyway and had new bearings and contacts and ...well you know starter stuff installed. Bought new starter off ebay in meantime and installed in bike. Bought new lithium battery off ebay claimed to fit all big dogs......................guess what?...........yep didn't fit mine or yours or any big dog but my battery in bike was fine anyway just wanted to update. So after new starter which starts bike a hell of allot faster than OEM all is well in Bigdogsville. The end oh ya Thanks to all that responded to this thread
