2004 speedo

I recently installed a new chrome speedo housing and now my speedo acts erratic. It will cycle when I turn the key on and off (sometimes). I also have the new style EHC with the USB plug. I have taken the speedo back apart and fooled with it and it worked for a couple days but now back on the frits. I plug it directly into the plug under the tank to see if I screwed a wire in the extention but it still screwed up Peged at 120mph then after mulipal key cycles went back to 0. It is odd that it decided to fail when I changed covers but with the troubleshooting of my problem it does not seem to be something I did. Do I have a speedo issue or a EHC issue. Any ideas? Also, does the EHC store the odometer miles or is that in the speedo. If I get a new speedo will the miles on my bike still be correct? P.S. My odometer still seems to be reading true and I cleaned the sending unit in the tranny. How can the odometer be correct and the speedo jumping around or peg out at 120mph? The plug out of the speedo alone is a three prong plug that incopasses the odometer, green, red, black. Sorry for the multi question. I searched many threads and cannot get an answer that suits me:)

Also, I did not disconnect the battery when I unplugged the speedo, these EHC's are very sensative, think that is the reason?

If its the original speedometer thats what they do.
I still have my original white devil on mine but out here in New Mexico I know when I am speeding so I dont worry about it

alot of guys are changing over to Dakota Digital

Just food for thought

Just change it to the Dakota...I did and I am much happier now...especially after three factory speedo changes...that thing just sucks.

New Mexico, where? I lived there most of my life. From your avitar you must be stationed there. The Dakota is digital correct? I like the analog autometer look but all over this forim they speak of the Dakota. I am not much of a conformist but when you have to you have to...

I'm pretty sure this doesn't help you much but I have a 2004 with the upgraded EHC and I just recently changed to the chrome housing as well. Mine works perfect but I did disconnect the battery before doing the job and added dielectric grease on all connections. Good luck!

Just went and got some di electrical grease and all other functions work. May just be a coincidence as to the housing change. I know these EHC's are quite sensative. I am guessing new speedo. Just got recalibration directions from Autometer. Dam the luck...

Does anyone know where the Miles or odometer reading is stored? Are the miles on my bike stored in the EHC or computer or in the speedo itself?

Why did my speedo go on the frits when I changed housings? It just seems odd. Is it my EHC or speedo??? I have a new EHC. All I did is put on a new chrome housing and then the speedo started acting up. UGH!!!!!

Yes, the odometer in the speedo still works and the outer besil has a different plug and all items in it still function. Was it just going out and bad timing or EHC or bad ground because chrome housing? Really doesn't ground to the housing. I don't really want the Dakota everyone recommends because it is digital, I like the white face of the BDM Autometer as well as it being analog. It really sucks. I redid all conections with Di electrical grease, no help. If anything it is worse. Now won't always cycle up and down when key is turned and sticks at 120mph. Dam thing has got me bugged...

I had the exact same problem on my 01, and it was just a loose wire in the connector behind the speedo. It was sticking like you said, and one of the speedo lights kept on goin out.
