2003 Bulldog Speedo Help Needed

Just purchase a 2003 Bulldog with a malfunctioning speedo.

It powers up however the self check at power up does not go to approx. 60 and return to 0. Rather it goes countclock wise about a 1/2" and then returns to 0.

Checked wire connections and for proper voltages and all appears good.

Also tried to check for a signal voltage from sensor (green wire) both on the bike (ingnition on and rolling bike back and forth) and also bench testing (passing large steel bolt head). In both cases the sensor had 12v to red, blk to GRD and tried to probed the green to GRD using my multimeter. No noted voltage reaction in both cases. This too appears suspect.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated before I go and spend the cash.

The service manual for your year bike states just what yours is doing, at power up it
goes counter clockwise pass zero, then back to zero.
For the first 5 seconds after this the display shows accumulated hours of time, after 5 seconds it shows accumulated miles or trip miles depending where you left it at last power up. If you do a calibration, the pulse count for a bulldog should be 135,000 driving 2 miles.

Xray Doc,
Thanks for your input. I do not have a service manual and glad to know the speedo appears to be functioning. Can someone supply me with instructions related to how to calibrate the speedo for the 2003 bulldog?

I also held down the speed mode buttoon at power up to see if had some kind of troubleshooting mode, appears it does, but not sure what the graphics/numbers means.
At power up I had 5 triangles (3 on top row and 2 on bottom), press the buttoon once more and had "0^^^^0" and pressed once more and obtain "Err" then pressed several more times and obtained the usual hours of operation, miles, etc. Does the service manual also address these codes as well?

Going to take a stab and say that is to calculate the odometer for the correct speed at start up do what you did hold the button down. I should have said that maybe do this where you can mesure a straight mile marker one end to the other. Start the bike with button pushed and then run the bike 1 mile at the end of the mile push the botton again and it should correct itself and calculate the correct speed. This is what I had on another bike. Sorry not sure how to read codes. Just sayin

Although the speedometers are programmed at the factory, the calibration can be checked and
changed if needed in the field. To check or change pulse count, follow the steps outlined below:
1. Make sure the speedo is set to read either MPH or KPH whichever is desired. To change the
setting from MPH to KPH or visa-versa perform the following: While holding down the
speedo button on the face of the speedometer, turn on the ignition key and the speedo display
window will show “-_-_-“ (see Figure 3) at this point keep holding down the speedo button
and after approximately 7 seconds the display will go the odometer reading with the setting
changed. To change back to the previous setting, just repeat this process. If the speedo is set
to read KPH there will be a dot at the upper right corner of the first digit (left) in the
odometer and the dot will disappear if changed to read MPH (see Figures 1 and 5).
2. The next step is to set the speedo to the calibration mode. While holding down the speedo
button on the face of the speedometer, turn on the ignition switch and the display window
will show “-_-_-“. At this point release the speedo button and wait a couple of seconds and
then again press it and the display will then show ”O--------O” (see Figure 4). At this point the
speedo is ready to be calibrated. Now ride the motorcycle a known 2-mile distance and then
stop but do NOT turn off the ignition switch. After stopping the bike with the ignition switch
still on, once again press the speedo button on the speedometer and the display will show a
number (see Figure 6). The value in the display is the number of pulses that the speedo
counted in the 2-mile distance. This value will disappear by pushing the button one more
time. If these instructions are followed and the display shows “Err” instead of a number then
repeat the process. When a value is displayed press the speedo button once more, the value
becomes the programmed value. For the correct speedo calibration do not accept any value
not listed in Table 1.

Before you ask.... Table 1

Calibration
The speedometer calibration is based upon a certain number of pulses generated by the speedo
sensor in a 2-mile distance. The pulse count is programmed at the factory. See Table 1 for pulse
count values for all of the 2003 Big Dog models.
