2003 Boxer leaking oil

Hello:
My 2003 Boxer leaks an amazing amount of oil from the breather at the bottom of the bike...leaves a trail of oil and puddles under the bike when it is sitting. Is the breather filter bad? Anyone ever ear of this problem before? I had the bike sitting outside in the hot sun all day...could the weather cause this?
Thanks for any help/suggestions!

What air cleaner do you have? I assume you are routing you crankcase breather to the ground?

How much is "amazing" amount of oil? Not uncommon for a breather routed to the ground to leave something behind.

Sometimes the check ball gets stuck in the oil pump as well. Worthwhile to take that out and clean it along with the seat. Some give the ball a firm punch to get it seated but you would need another ball or something to do that so you don't damage the one in there.

I'm guessing the oil leak is new? Not something you have been battling over time?

Ok, did some more checking...the leak only occurs when the bike is running, stops slowly after the bike is shut off. but after the bike runs for a few minutes, there is a softball-sized puddle under the bike. Dripping from the breather (?) at a good rate (1 drop a second). Leak begins immediately when the bike is started. It is leaking from the small cylindrical filter/breather (?) at the end of a braided line coming from between the tranny and engine. I thought the line was coming from the oil tank but it is not. The line originates somewhere down between the tranny and motor...can't really see down in between the two to find out where it really starts. So, I'm not sure if this is tranny fluid, chain case fluid or motor oil...any thoughts, wrenchers?

Have you changed the oil lately? If it is over full on oil it will blow out too. Last summer, I stared blowing oil down the side of my 03, I changed the rocker box gaskets. There is a little flapper on the gasket that covers the hole for the breather vent.
If you need any parts, get ahole of the Kaptin at Wild Steed Worx, he can fix you up.

This is a dry sump engine. Oil will slowly leak out of the oil tank into the engine sump due to gravity. If it has been a long period of time since you started your scoot, the oil level in the oil tank will be down and you can expect the excess oil in the engine to be returned to the oil tank after start-up. If a large amount is there, some will be thrown out through the crankcase breather.

Someone just posted how to seat the bearing in the oil pump, using a pushrod, a day or two ago. I can't find that thread, anyone remember it.

so, should i let the bike run for awhile and see if the oil pressure builds up and the leaking from the breather stops?
Run the bike till it's warm check the oil level. Add some if you need it and put some miles on the bike and see if it still leaks.

Wait hang on....Oil pressure builds up? Do you have a pressure gauge now? It should be like 40-50lbs when cold and slowly go down to 10 or so when warm. Are you seeing no pressure currently? That's an entirely different issue if that's the case

no pressure gauge...just thought as the pressure builds it would stop leaking...just a figure of speech. I'll try what you recommend and see. The bike has been sitting for quite some time, no more than 10 miles on it in the last 3 months...maybe that's the issue that the oil drained down into the crank case and is overflowing? Hope it is something that simple but usually isn't!

If it is the breather line from the crank case on my bike it runs back to the oil tank. I posted a pic on here that shows the line. Post up a pic of where the line goes into the crank case if you can. Sounds like you are wet slumping for some reason and the oil is being pushed out the crank case breather.

Not uncommon for check ball to get stuck if bike sits. If you ride it you might be fine or you might have to seat the ball.

Regardless make sure there is enough oil before you start it and listen to the lifters as I don't think you have an oil light? Just to make sure oil Is actually circulating. I've seen oil leak out the bottom end due to a bad oil pump, woodroff key fell out, although it's very unlikely if bike has just been sitting for the pump to go bad. Oil pumps really can't break. Spring wears out, check ball stuck, key falls out, or gasket leaks that's it you should never have to buy a new one
