2002 Speedo issue

2002 Speedo issue/ FIXED

Just bought this 02 Pitbull and the speedo works and then it will bottom out then go back to zero. Then all of the sudden it will work again then shut down. I cleaned the sensor and it did have a litlle bit of metal shavings on it,just wiped it off and put it back on. Still same results with working and then stops. Odometer is working. Do I need to recalibrate it? If so,any how to's.Do I need to spray the sensor off instead of wiping it down? Do I need a new speedo? If so, where can I find a speedo? Does a 2002 have a EHC?

Mine was doing the same thing. found it has a short right where the wires exit the back of the speedo. I may replace with Dakota digital eventually

If your odometer is working your sensor is ok
The problem will either be the speedometer itself or wiring inside it. It should be a VDO speedometer on a 2002 and bigdogpartsking had a new one for sale on ebay a few days ago.

Speedometer fixed

Well found the problem with my speedometer. My stator and rotor were trashed. This explaines why it would work for a few miles and then go haywire. By keeping it on the tender I would leave with a full charge and when the battery started to drain, speedo would screw up. My mechanic went through the whole bike when putting tires on and for a piece of mind had him re-align everything on the bike. He noticed it wasn't charging then dug deeper and found the issue. He also put a circuit breaker by the battery to remove all the extra wires off of the battery. Bike runs pretty damn good except I have a little delay when giving it gas at higher RPM's. I need to adjust my carb or change some jets. Below is a picture of the rotor. Thanks for anyone with your help.New rotor on left old on right.
