2002 Pitbull charging where is CB?

I just got a 2002 Pitbull and love it. I have been going thru fixing a lot of little things. Horn didn't work - broken wire. Headlight didn't work - broken bulb and adjure light wasn't in tight. Speedo didn't work - shorted wire. Battery was dead when I got it home - put on trickle charge - starts and runs well (well little rich at idle but will get to that next)

So now I am checking the charging system. New battery checks at 13.46 volts after taking off charger and waiting 5 minutes. Turn on switch drops to about 13.2 with low beam on. Starts right up then stays around 12.8. When I raise the rpms the voltage stays the same.

After searching on here I started looking for the circuit breaker. Sine this is my first BD am not sure what I am looking for. Voltage regulator is pn #55120. Where is the circuit breaker? Driving me crazy...

Traced from vr. No circuit breaker in sight. Did find one unconnected wire behind battery that looks like it connects to a spade connector. I am wondering if someone has rewired with one of the kits I read about on
Here. Does this harness look stock? See the one wire that isn't connected. More tracing I guess

Btw the black box pulled up is a led controller the previous owner installed

Didn't the older dogs have a fuse in the wire from the voltage regulator to the battery . I am sure someone will chime in that knows for sure. Do you have a manual and electrical schematic for your bike?

I think I see the 40 amp fuse box in there... that's is the upgrade they did from the CB.

That fuse close to the oil tank cap in on the battery tender pigtail. I am reading thru the manual and will go thru the electrical drawings and begin tracing wires. Will start testing everything this afternoon. Just bugs me that the wire on the right of the picture toward the rear of the bike isn't connected.

Think I found the problem. Checked to be sure stator/alternator was correct output. Checked out at 17.4 volts at 1000 rpm. Think that is correct. Traced wire from vr to battery and it was hooked to NEGATIVE terminal. Switched to positive. Started bike and now volts increase with rpms. The previous owner replaced the battery and I bet he connected it wrong.

Question what should the max volts at the battery be when running? I saw it somewhere but can find it now. Volts go up to 16+

Also no circuit breaker in line from vr. Vr is part I referenced in first post

Found what I read earlier. In the how to section the testing procedure states that the voltage should not go above 15. When I look at the installation instructions for the VR on Wild Steed Worx. The testing procedure doesn't mention the 15 volts limit. It states a 1/2 to 1 volt increase at 1500, That is about what I get. Here is an excerpt from the instructions...

TROUBLE SHOOTING

1. Do not use test procedure found in the factory shop manual. The Compu-Fire voltage regulator uses high efficiency series circuitry. The electronic circuitry is completely different.
2. With the main switch OFF, measure the voltage from the regulator output terminal to ground. The reading should be 12 - 13 volts. If there is no voltage reading, the battery is disconnected.
3. Start the engine and bring the RPM to 1500. The voltage should rise 1/2 to 1 volt. This indicates that the voltage regulator is charging. This completes the test.

Going up to 16.8 volts probably means I need a new VR?? At least i found why it wasnt charging....

Yeah that's plenty high shouldn't go near that high...:eek: Your battery is most likely toast if you've been riding it that way for a while...

The wire from the VR was going to the negative post on the battery so it wasn't charging it. Not sure what it would do going to the negative post? I only ran it for 2 or 3 minutes after connecting it correctly to test voltage.

Today I replaced the voltage regulator. Since I didn't have a circuit breaker, I added an inline fuse at the battery box. Charging like it is supposed to now. When the previous owner connected it to the negative post on the battery, I am guessing the short to ground burned the VR out. Instead of the volts going higher and higher as rpms increase, it now tops out around 14 like it is supposed to.

On to replacing the coil. The coil works fine but the mounting holes are broken so it is loose under the coil cover. Not sure how to remove the split tank to get to the coil cover....
