2002 Husky

So, lately I got the itch to pull my Husky out of the garage and ride again. I found a lot of stuff on it that needs repair and most of it has been taken care of. But there are a few things I have issues with. If anybody here can fill me in on a few points, that would be awesome.
I’ve replace all brake pads and found the calipers both out of whack/in need of proper shimming. The question here is, how accurate do I have to be?

I also replaced the rear tire and when I wanted to tighten the axle, which is really nothing but a big bolt, I wasn’t sure how much torque to use on it. In the forum here I found a few torque sheets but they list 65ft/lbs and that seems low to me.

The other issue I currently have is that I would like to do some changes to the bike. Like a different muffler and maybe a open primary belt drive? But wherever I look, I can’t really figure out which one I need or what would fit this bike. Muffler wise I’d like something that gives me more bottom end torque but my muffler is right gutted and parts are not available anymore. What would you guys recommend?

Hang in there , I'm sure someone will chime in
Lots of information and experience on this forum assuming the 02 husky would be L.S.D. possibly Softail Harley Davidson exhaust of your choice ?

The caliper needs to be centered on the rotor.
65 foot pounds sounds about right. And you probably have more choices of exhaust than the 94 and up. Hope this helps and dont get discouraged. LottA good info and help on here. Good luck. Oh get some rough measurements and ride down to your local harley shop. Most of them are dying for some business.

Joe, can you post a pic of the right side of you're bike? I think the stock exhaust would have been a Super Trap Kerker 2 into one. Tons of bottom end and a very deep sound. I got mine from Bigdogpartsking. When I bought my bike it had Vance and Hines Big Shots on it. I believe they were for a Harley motor. They did not fit the heads correctly. Good luck!

Thanks!
Yes, Softail is what I gathered. Just can’t imagine those are all the same.

Naw, I’m not discouraged.
Yes, the caliper should be centered. But like how exact do I have to be? I do laser alignments on pumps at work within 2thou. I doubt that such tight tolerance would be needed here.
Closest actual Harley dealer is too far for away for me to get at, my back is fucked up and so I can’t ride far :(
But we got a place here “cycle boyz”. They do service/repair and custom builds. I’ll hound them once I got it up and running :)
I’ll set the torque to 65 then. Thanks a lot

Mine is a hooker tuned flow, without guts.

You want low end torque and great sound. Start looking for a Thunder Header exhaust. Since you are pre 2004 like me, go to eBay and look up Thunder Header Harley soft tail custom. This is also a 7-8 HP gain exhaust! As for your break calipers. Are they rusted or stuck PM me

I have one on my H-D Ultra Classic. I too wanted Low end torque, sounds great and functions fantastic. Don’t know of anything on the market that sounds as good and will add the HP this system will! 02C526E5-54D5-4BEA-8DC3-2E5265F73CD2.jpeg

Center your caliper by eye or maybe using a small ruler.
You'll get it within half a millimeter which is good enough.

Paul.
You should see what my pads look like. They’re like wedges. And the rotor was actually rubbing on the caliper. I got it within 10thousands of an inch, which I can live with :)
Thanks!

Sounds like a good exhaust ! Thank you.
My front calipers are a bit stiff, so I cleaned them inside and out. But they had been shimmed so bad that the rotor actually rubbed on them at the lower end, turning my pads into wedges.
