Check the 1/4" bolt on the bendix gear. Gotta pull the outer primary cover.

I agree with Harry. Pull the primary cover. Sometimes shit happens just leave you scratching your head…this very thing just happened to me about a month or so ago on my 2000 Vintage Sport. Was the bolt Harry is referring to.

Got it on a tender does seem to start a second or two after the bendix has thrown in then started just spinning making that whining noise got a battery coming don’t understand about the bolt at the end of the splinted shaft on the bendix if it’s splinted how can a bolt hold it on I can feel the starter engage the bendix just changed all fluids if the primary has to come off to fix it that’s what I’ll do

Mick I thought the shaft was splinted how does the bolt hold on the gear without coming all the way off?

Can you engage the starter manually through the starter plunger if you take the cover off? Before you take the primary cover off check that. Make sure it’s on the primary side first.

My deal was the tab on the lock plate somehow broke off and the jackshaft bolt backed out of the starter. When I pulled the primary cover the bolt & pinion gear were on the other side of the flywheel. I thought at 1st the jackshaft bolt broke off in the starter but then I realized it was just backed out because the lock plate wasn’t holding it anymore. Craziest shit ever

Take this cover off your starter. Manually activate the starter by pressing the plunger with your finger. If it grabs the flywheel and spins the motor but then starts spinning you likely need a new starter or rebuild. If it doesn’t try to spin the flywheel but you know it’s working because you can hear it spinning pull the primary cover & see what’s going on.

Yep. You will see when you remove the cover slowly… the plunger inside. With the ignition on instead of hitting the start button on the handle bars push the plunger with your finger. This is where you would install a slam button if your switch stopped working. It should crank the motor over immediately
