20 inch sissy bar - weak struts?

Hi all,

Ginz Choppers advised me earlier today that some models of bigdog with the top mounting sissy bar have been prone to cracking the struts.

My 05 chopper has the rear mounting sissy bar.

Im planning to put a 20inch sissy bar onto it. Does anyone know if there is a chance that I will crack the struts on it?

Cheers

I've yet to hear of cracked sissy bar fender struts.
Remember, any time YOU redesign something you're taking a risk.
They called the sissy bar for the reader mounts an 18". How does the height of your relate to the stock height when you say 20".

im having ginz choppers make it for me. I just asked for a 20" im not really sure where that measurement is taken from / to...

Lewis, you have the rear mount struts so why worry about the top mounts.

Curtis,
I have the new design sissy bar with the tapered collets and I cracked my strut. I think the reason it cracked was because I had the slot in the tapered collet toward the outside of the bike where the wall of the strut is the thinnest. If you don't torque the bolt correctly you can continue to expand the collet until the strut cracks. I just cut the taper off the sissy bar and used grade 8 bolts and I haven't had a problem over the last 4 yrs.

Yeah I could see that happening. I was thinking more along the lines of cracking all the way through from to much leverage.
I was breaking bolts on mine until I counter bored the bar hole and started using a grade 8 bolt that I modified so there was only a 1/2" of thread on it.

I don't care about the top mount ones. Im just checking if anyone has had problems with the rear mount ones because Jinz said that they never made a rear mount one (so I have to send them my old one).

It is tapered at the end where it slots in...

That's a big long bar that's going in there so there will be a lot of leverage. If nobody else had problems its probably OK.
