1st for me

I am Rollin down hwy 167 up in the Seattle area during a killer dry spell with some good heat in the air. On my way to work with my Bigdog Mastiff freshly detailed, I'm thinking to myself life is good.
I usually roll with a polishing rag in my back pocket and today was no different.
15 miles into my 25 mile commute I felt a swift pull from the rear pocket where the rag "used" to be. I looked back and down and noticed my micro fiber rag stuck inside my rear brake caliper.
I moved over to the right and then onto the shoulder but as I went to brake I had no rear brakes!!. I pulled what I could out of the caliper housing but there was a big piece that had become like a hard plastic plug between the rod in the caliper and it broke the anti vibration spring.
At work I was able to get the rest of it out but still had no rear brakes.
I pulled the pads and the were actually still in decent shape however I connected with Chris at Kansas Motorworks and ordered some new pads and De-glazed the rotor.
Used some cleaner on the caliper, installed the new pads and seems to be fine. Springs will be here tomorrow.
Morale of the story be very careful riding with anything hanging out of your pocket or long shirts tied around your waste.
99 times out of 100 the rag would have just landed on road but this time it messed me up, shut me down for a few days and was totally avoidable.

Be safe and ride on

Thanks for sharing your misfortune Bob, very uncommon things can and do happen. A few years ago I was riding along the beach strip in our town and a cheap foam flip flop blew into the street and right into my drive belt as it got jammed into the sprocket it stretched the belt enough to snap it... talk about bad odds..
Stay alert out there, be safe. :old2:

Good story.. thanks for sharing.. and yeah some things are crazy.. i was heading down 146 to Galveston with the wife on the back and my left mirror came off and hit her in the shoulder.. I felt that thing zip by me at about 70 mph.. she had a gnarly bruise that night.. the screw was still in the arm that holds it the mirror to the arm, the swivel ball had broke off inside the mirror and there it went... lol

Lucky you. Back when I was dirt biking, I flipped a rag through the chain on my wallet. About the time I hit 3rd gear, it got caught in the chain, and yanked me off the bike.

No shit.. I told my story to a guy at work and he was telling me a buddy of his was trail riding and his shirt got pulled into the rear sprocket and he launched right over the handle bars and had no i dea what had even happened because it happened so quick.
I guess I was lucky.

I wanna ride onnnn. (AC/DC)

Well since we are on the subject of stupid things to do...
About 3 weeks ago a friend and I were running on a 2 lane road, 55 limit.
IDIOT 1 here had his leather held between the headlight and windshield. We
ran up on a 55'er and whipped out to pass, about 80-85 my jacket comes up the
windshield, catches my helmet visor which was up and likes to rip my head off.
NO MORE strapping anything on my Dog, NOTHING PERIOD!!
My neck and left shoulder are still sore.

Stupid is still broken and hasn't been fixed yet..... forgot, can't fix stupid.

Wow-
Glad you were able to ride out of it and tell your story. As this threads continues I am sure there are many harrowing stories to come that will remind us how quickly things can go sideways.
Keep it upright brother and ride on!
