I had the same issue and ruled out the stator incorrectly. Replaced the VR, traced and reconnected about every ground and supply wire, etc. The starter finally gave up during this same two week period - replaced that. With each repair, the system seemed to respond well but I could only ride for a couple hours before the battery would be drained. This was 1200 miles from home in West Texas. Each time one more issue was resolved, my confidence would go up and I would commit to the rest of the trip. Finally, as I was starting up 2 blocks from the hotel in Ingram TX where we planned to spend the night, as we had stopped to check the map which fork i the road to take, The bike just blanked out, went black as I touched the start switch - nothing. Fortunately I was across the street from Jacks Cycle Service and I pushed the bike over to the front door, parked it for the night and walked to the hotel. Next morning, Ron Kujat called me and said " he, what's your bike doing on my doorstep?". I told him what was wrong and he found it in five minutes. It was the stator. He replaced it while we ate breakfast. When I picked up the bike, he showed me the stator and 7 out of twelve of the coils were fried. FIve looked brand new (I had replaced it 4000 miles earlier). We surmised that the coils were burning up one at a time over the several weeks of issues and each time the stator lost output capacity and the system was slowly draining as I would ride. It would charge but not enough to keep up with the draw. Until the last few coils burned up. Next mooring, headed for Phoenix and have had no issues since (1500 miles and counting).
