117 cam timing question

I took my 117 apart last night to send the heads to have them done and figured I would go ahead and change the cam to the Woods .650. Well long story short I went inside to get me and my brother a sandwich and when I returned he had the old cam in his hand.

I asked him if he looked to see where the marks where and he said no. I have no manual for this motor and need to put the cam in.

When the piston closest to the front of the bike is top dead center the mark on the end of the crank shaft gear is fangled down to the right. How do you set the timing on 117 so I can put the damn cam back in.

Also is it still against the law to choke a brother?

The cam has 2 etched lines/dots on it about 45 degrees apart from each other. The gears in the bike that the cam lines up with also have marks on them. Rotate your motor so that the larger gear (on the right) lines up with the mark on the cam gear. Then you can rotate the smaller gear (on the left as you are facing it) by hand to line up with the second mark on the cam.

After you put in your new cam, if your space is not right, I have a full set of cam shims (thrust washers) minus the one size I used to get my spacing right. You're welcome to them.

Oh yeah, you can kick your brother's ass, but no one else can kick his ass. I'm sure that's how that works.

I think there are 2 different 650 woods cams.
I'm not that familiar with the Woods cams, other than just hearing the name, but I'm sure that the one you want will have the same number of teeth as your stock cam.

I'm not sure where the piston lines up when the marks are aligned, but just make sure the marks all line up with each other and you'll be good to go.

I'm sure you already know, but better safe than sorry. Make sure the springs in your head are rated for the cam you're putting in. I think S&S Triple Springs are rated for 650 lift, but there are others out there as well that will work.:cheers:

I am having the 640 springs with the titanium clip put in when they Port and polish them,.

I have the heads off right now and when I am at top dead center the mark is in the crank shaft mark is in the whole on the primary side like it should be but the mark on the other end of the crank is facing down and right and that is what had me stumped.

S&S triple springs with red stripe are rated .640
As for cam installation you just line up the dots as shown on the previous pics.
You will need to shim the cam when you install. Specs call for .0005-.0015 of end play.
To measure this you typically need to pull a tappet block, and check between the cam and the spacer
while you're in there you can also install the S&S reed style breather which does not have a gear and does not have to mate with the cam that way you only have to line up the cam and the pinion gear by the dots
