10,000 mile service

So I figured I'd let my dealer do a 10,000 mile service since it's a bigger one.

They say the 10,000 mile service starts at $1,000! Seems *really* high to me.

Is this normal or are they taking me for a ride? They've been pretty good to me in the past. However, this time the bike has sat there for the last 2 weeks without even being worked on..

I know its been said many times before but if you can do it yourself, and most of it is pretty easy, its the only way to go.

The dealer by me, which is Arlen Ness in California, charges about $110/hour and their 10K service is just over $900.

Coast Choppers in San Diego wanted $1300 (when they were still in business).
Mad Dog in 1000 Palms charged me $634.88 including rear brake pads.

Do it yourself. The largest part of this job will be the wheel bearings... but if you take the hubs in yourself to get them swapped... you'll save big money.

Wheel bearing and steering head bearing. I had my 05 ULtra Classic 20,000 mile service in Vegas @ Sinister Cycle. $500 but did not include steering head bearing repack. That service was extra, and I do not remember them doing the wheel bearings. Do harleys not require a wheel bearing repack? Non sevice item on newer harleys, I saw that in the article below.

$1000 seem very high for a routine 10,000 mile service. That said it will depend on the parts and if they are doing anything extra outside of the recommended OEM 10K service, say like changing the brake pads, rebuild forks, etc.

Make sure you get a detail of what the 10,000k min would include (such as does it include the change of wheel bearing, inspect and repack steering bearing, etc.) would be a shame to pay that min and then have them jack up the price for parts that are supposed to be included such as the wheel bearings.

Good luck and let us know how you make out. In the future you can save quiet a bit by doing most if not all the work yourself. For example changing the fluids, spark plugs, adjusting the primary belt, lubing the cables, etc will cut the cost down on the other stuff.

According to that article you posted the new style double row bearings are rated for 100,000 miles!
Our bikes use the old style bearings that HD used back in the 60's shown in the article. They need to be replaced every 10,000 according to our manual. These are sealed bearings and are intended to be replaced not repacked.
Here are mine I pulled out yesterday, they are shot at 30,000. I should be shot for letting them go that long!!!!

The one on the right is the brake side on the front wheel.

This is from the 05 manual:

10,000 MILE MAINTENANCE:
1. Change engine oil and filter
2. Inspect air cleaner and service as required
3. Inspect petcock fuel filter screen and service as required
4. Change primary drive lubricant / clean magnetic drain plug
5. Check and adjust primary chain
6. Check and adjust the clutch
7. Change transmission lubricant. Clean magnetic plug
8. Check and lubricate throw-out bearing and clutch rod
9. Check and adjust drive belt with rider on bike
10. Check rear brake pedal adjustment
11. Inspect brake pads and discs for wear
12. Inspect brake fluid reservoir level and condition
13. Inspect oil lines and brake system for leaks
14. Lubricate: brake and clutch levers - throttle and clutch cables
15. Inspect operation of throttle and enrichener controls
16. Inspect fuel valve, lines and fittings for leaks
17. Check tire pressure - inspect tire and tread for wear & damage
18. Check rear swing arm pivot nut
19. Check all operations of electrical equipment and switches
20. Inspect and / or replace spark plugs as needed
21. Check ignition timing
22. Check condition of rear shock absorbers
23. Check torque of all fasteners except engine head bolts
24. Check engine idle speed adjustment
25. Clean tappet screen
26. Inspect, repack and adjust steering head bearings

I think someone mentioned a better bearing a while back(maybe Timken)
would they last longer than 10k?
I know they are a lot more but i don't wont to have a failure and ruin a wheel like almost happened to someone on here a couple weeks ago

You know TCAL, I'm confused now cause I've know/been told that the bearings on MY 05 were sealed so should be replaced every 10,000 miles. Another thought is that the bearings are supposed to be sealed meaning they aren't designed to be repacked as indicated by the newer owners manual posted above so they must have changed bearing styles and that's baffling.
I would imagine that any bearing would work as long as it's the proper size. I would just encourage all to not go as long as I have without checking them. Mine were in bad shape when I pulled them yesterday after about 30,000 miles.
