07 Pitbull Starter issue

Alright guys, Wild Steed Worx got my starter and they already started to repair it! It was a broken pinion gear and shaft. Hopefully my bike will be back up and running this next week, since my birthday is on friday!

Thanks again for the recommendations and help guys! I love Strokers but I also love working on my own bike and saving a little cash!

Will have to meet up sometime at Strokers once you get her back on the road.

This may be a dumb question, I was out cleaning a few things on the bike while I wait to get the starter back from Wild Steed worx and I noticed the Clutch lever had zero pressure on it. It would pull in with ease. Is this normal?

I pulled the exhaust, clutch cover with a long rod attached the primary cover and that is it. Was just curious if maybe I broke something in the process or this is normal. there is also no primary oil right now due to draining when i removed the cover.

if you pulled out the rod, there you go. that is what actuates the clutch, so, no there won't be any tension on the clutch lever.

wait a minute, you say it was attached to the primary cover? it had to have come out the same side as the exhaust on the right side. what are you calling the primary cover, the big cover on the left side of the bike or the small round cover on the right side?

I pulled the primary cover on the left side of the bike to get the broken shaft pieces out. then I removed the clutch cover on the rightside "exhaust" side of the bike. I figured thats what it was I was just unsure. The rod was attached to the clutch clover. Sorry for any confusion

Will I need to readjust the clutch when I put everything back together?

Yes, you should have removed the rod from the cover for ease of removal but its easy to adjust. Just ensure the ball and ramp are fully retracted when you put the cover back on

I just got the starter in the bike and do I need to shim it at all or will it adjust on its own. I lined the sprockets up on the gear to the teeth and I pushed the slam button in just to check for clearance. The shaft and gear did not want to retract after engaging the sprocket. Is that suppose To be like that with no power to the bike?


Sorry for all the dumb questions. Just want to make sure everything is right before I fire it up

No shimming required. If you installed the slam button according to instructions you should be OK. If WSW installed it for you, you should be good to go...

Okay, I just read exactly how the starting system functions on a Bigdog and I wanted to ensure the starter would retract the pinoin gear, which it does. WSW did the starter rebuild and the slam button so I have no doubt it will work.


Does someone want to explain the proper starting procedure should I ever need to use the slam button? Better to know now than need to know later.

What post do I need to hook the negative cable from the battery too? It has been about a week and I forgot what one I pulled it off.

Most models are connected to the forward starter mount bolt

The negative cable is bolted to the top forward bolt in the starter.
We use a larger voting in the flange so a little oil on it will help.
As for the slam button just turn key on and hit the run button and push the button.

Took the bike out for a little 50 mile ride and everything worked out great. Started right up with no problems.

I also sheared my pinion gear off of my bike. It was easiest for me to pull the primary cover and to get the gear out. Starter removal was pretty straight forward and took less than an hour for my first time.

the rebuild cost me about $150 with a slam button installed. You will need to send them the gear that sheard off if this is truly what happened to yours.
