07 K9 STARTING AND STALLING PROBLEMS

Yesterday the bike would turn over but wouldn't start. Noticed lights weren't cycling on the tach. Pulled the rear cyclinder spark plug and it had spark. Charged up battery. Went for a 50 mile ride and ran okay other than excessive popping on decel. Charged battery this morning and fired right up. Went to pull out of driveway and stalled out. After quite a bit of cranking it fired up. In about 3 miles it conked out about 5 times. Noticed again it won't start when tach lights aren't cycling. As soon as they cyle, bike fires up. Managed ot get it home but was trying to stall and excessive backfiring and popping. Any suggestions?

Brand new Braille battery and had it full charge before leaving. It stalled in the driveway and continued to act up.

Connections are all tight. On my way home i was doing about 60mph and it was missing and backfiring. The guy following me said there was flames shouting out of the pipes. For some reason it is misfiring. Could it be the crank position sensor. Just odd that when it turns over and doesn't start, the tach doesn't show anything. As soon as the tach lights show it will start. May run for 1 minute or 10 minutes before shutting down. Vey intermittent.

if you've got flames coming out of the exhaust, then that's unburned gas, which could be bad spark or bad timing??? sensor, coil, plug wires, v/r ????

What's the battery voltage? 12.8v or better.

Could be the charging system isn't working well or at all.

Is your dog an EFI or Carb? It appears to be running rich and I mean rich which is why it is missing. You are fouling the plugs in the drive way before you even leave to go anywhere. If it is Carb what jet size jets are you running and have you tried to adjust the carb. Do a search on here on how to adjust the S&S shorty or go to the S & S web site for help on adjusting the carb.

Hope that helps

Dog is carb. Plugs are a nice brown color. Did not use the enrichner. I just traveled 1200 miles today to bring the dog home. (Kalamazoo to Winnipeg) I'll check things out better tomorrow. I've got my original battery on the charger and will check the voltage in the Braille tomorrow. I haven't had much luck with the Braille batteries. The first one they sent me was a dud and this is the third time i'm using the one they sent me. If the plug wires are under 25,000 ohms, is that okay? I'll also install new plugs. I'll pull the crank position sensor and make sure it is clean. I've never had the screen off the fuel shutoff valve with 10,000 miles now. I'm thinking it is more of an electrical issue. Any information is appreciated.

Checked out the battery today and okay. Checked the spark on the old spark plugs and looked okay but changed anyway. Cleaned the crank position sensor. Appeared gas cap vent was okay. Took bike out for a ride and ran like a dream. Not stalling or backfiring. Hope everything is okay and not an intermittent problem that may occur again.

I think i found the problem last night. On top of the carb there are 2 ports and they are plugged off with plastic caps. One of my ports was wide open and sucking air. Probably blew off when it first backfired. Also could only get about 80 miles to a tank of gas. Plugged it up with a cap and now no more backfiring or decel popping. Thanks for all the info woodbutcher. You guys are the best.

Looks like this thread might come in handy for me as well. I am having the same issues with backfiring and popping. I think I might have a firing issue. It seems to just be intermittent. I always let the bike warm up for atleast 5 mins before I ride. When I throttle up in neutral it's fine, but when I start riding it sputters and is jerky for the first few miles. It will backfire once in awhile too when I first start riding on decel. I'll be checking my plugs tomorrow and I'll look for any unplugged ports.
