'07 K9 POWER FAILURE

Well, now it's my turn...
My K9 has developed a power failure problem. While riding, the bike completely shuts down, including all lights/power, as if I had turned off the key.
Most of the time, switching the key off and then back on gets the power back for a restart. But then it will shut down again...friggin' dangerous in traffic.
At first I suspected a faulty ignition switch, but the key and switch detents appear to be ok. So, the next time it shut down, I checked out the EHC fault lights. All of the lights were illuminated. I switched the key off and then on, got power, and normal fault lights.
Does this mean that my EHC is tanking? (I know, Jake..."Wire Plus"):D
I need to confirm I haven't missed something before making additional contributions to the Tuckey Retirement Plan.

WOW, yet another "bike totally shutting down" issue!

Well, that's EXACTLY whay my '05 Chopper was doing. Total shutdown as if someone had ripped the battery out, then it would magically come back to life if I just let the bike sit for about 10 minutes.

Replaced the EHC with the Wire-Plus, and problem solved!

Mine did the same thing and it was just loose crimps on the wire connectors that connect to both battery terminals. These are the small 16ga. wires from the harness that power the EHC and other items. The crimps were so loose that the wires could easily be pulled out of the ring-tounge crimps fastened to the battery terminal. They were replaced/recrimped and all the strange problems went away. Acted like a faulty EHC but in reality the loose crimps were causing intermittent power cuts, low voltage/current supply and would kill the bike like shutting off the key.

If the EHC gets a low voltage/current 12v battery supply from poor connections it goes nuts with the LED lights when it powers-up if it powers-up!

IT'S NOT ALWAYS THE EHC

Big Dog Bro, I missed your thread in my research prior to posting my thread. Thanks for the info. It sounds like you had a very similar problem. I agree that the EHC is not always to blame...we'll see if I get lucky like you did, or if I gotta go the Wire Plus route.
Thanks to all for your responses, they are appreciated.

I installed a PDM kit and put on 600 miles this week with no problems. Went out last night and after about half an hour ride in the city bike shutdown. It would turn over but not start. After about another half an hour it fired right up. Still trailered it home. Today the bike fired right up. Charging system appears okay. After 10 minutes of riding on the highway, bike shut down. Turned over again but wouldn't start. Got a ride home to get the trailer. Got back maybe 50 minutes later and bike started right up. Anyone know what the problem may be. Seems like something is heating up and breaking down and then once it cools off, it is good for another couple of minutes. Using a 2 and half year old Braille battery.

Do you lose all power or does bike die completely?

If you still have power to your headlight/turn signals. It could be your ignition module taking a dump..just a thought

I would also say ignition module. The shop that rebuilt my engine says he has seen many of the Thunder heart ignitions do this and he advised I replace mine.

I only have about 140 miles on my PDM. I still plan on doing the ignition. My tranny went south just after the PDM install so I just finished that project this weekend

Still have power because starter turns over and red light is on the ignition module. Turns over but won't fireup. Tried popping the clutch while rolling to a stop after it dies and nothing.

With those symptoms, I would check the venting of the fuel cap. It doesn't sound like an electrical problem to me. Loosen the cap and see if it will start.

if the LEDs on ign. module are not blinking when it's turning over, it is probably the crank position sensor.
